  Considered the greatest baseball poem of all time, "Casey at the Bat" is the beloved tale of the Mudville Nine, a hapless baseball club entering the ninth inning of a ballgame down two runs and with little hope of succeeding...unless their star slugger Casey can manage to get a turn at the plate. With two outs, the outlook is grim but...when the two players preceding Casey manage to get on base, the stage is set for a grand finale, giving the citizens of Mudville hope that their hero can save the day! Ernest Lawrence Thayer originally wrote this poem for the San Francisco Examiner and it would go on to become what Baseball Almanac called "the single most famous baseball poem ever written."   In this second volume of Dante Alighieri's ageless classic, the *Comedie* (*Commedia*) , Vergil and Dante emerge from their upward climb out the lower depths of Hell, at the center of the earth, to find themselves at the shores of the Mountain of Purgatory, exactly opposite Jerusalem in the Hemisphere of Water, where it is the only land below the Equator. Here they encounter other newcome souls and those who are awaiting entry into the punishments. In Canto IX they pass through the Gate of Purgatory and begin the upward climb through the seven circles to the Garden at the top where Beatrice is waiting for Dante to lead him on the ascent to the stars.

  The Garden - a poem and an essay

  The Garden by A. F. Moritz is a passionate denunciation of injustice, especially as seen in the violent injustice directed to the African diaspora in North America. Comprised of a long poem, “The Garden in the Midst”, and an in-depth essay, “The Poet’s Garden,” the book centers on the South Central Los Angeles “riot” of 1992 in response to the acquittal of police officers caught badly beating Rodney King in 1991. From this central point, the poem and essay reach out to encompass the May 2020 police murder of George Floyd, the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, and the long history of legalized criminal repression these two deaths belong to. Largely completed in 1992, Moritz returned to his manuscript in 2020 following the death of Mr. Floyd out of self-interrogation and grief. The Garden suggests that only the essence of poetry can prove antithetical antidote—if there can even be one—to this human crime and tragedy.
