  Martin Luther King - From 1955 till his assassination in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist clergyman and activist who ended up being the most identifiable voice and leader in the American civil liberties movement. He was the child of Martin Luther King Sr., an early civil liberties leader and clergyman. King marched for black people's right to vote, desegregation, labor rights, and other fundamental civil liberties, and he led them. 
  Mahatma Gandhi - Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian attorney, anti-colonial patriot, and political ethicist who used nonviolent resistance to lead the triumphant struggle for India's independence from British rule, motivating civil liberties and liberty movements around the globe. The epithet Mahtm (which means "great-souled" or "age-old" in Sanskrit) was at first appointed to him in South Africa in the year 1914 and is now used all across the world. Gandhi was born into a Hindu family in seaside Gujarat and studied law at the Inner Temple in London. In the year 1893, he came to South Africa to represent an Indian business owner in a case after 2 years in India, where he was not able to establish a rewarding law practice. 
  Mother Teresa - Mother Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu, typically referred to as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in the Catholic Church, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. She was born in Skopje (today the capital of North Macedonia), which was then part of the Ottoman Empire's Kosovo Vilayet. After eighteen years in Skopje, she went to Ireland and ultimately to India, where she spent the remainder of her life.

  Politicians, judges, and citizens commonly use the phrase "rule of law" to describe some good that flows from a legal system. But what precisely is that good? Even in Aristotle's time, there was no agreement on either its nature, and on whether it counted as an unqualified good. Even now, a core rule-of-law aspiration is that law can constrain how power is flexed. But how or when? Disagreement persists as to whether the rule of law is a matter of how law is used or why it is deployed. In consequence, the World Bank, the leaders of Singapore's one-party state, and the Communist Party in China can all offer their own spins on the concept. 
   
   
   
  By charting these disagreements and showing the overlap and the conflicts between different understandings of the concept, Aziz Z. Huq shows how the rule of law can still be used as an important tool for framing and evaluating the goals and functions of a legal system. He traces the idea's historical origins from ancient Greece to the constitutional theorist Albert Venn Dicey to the economist and political philosopher Friedrich Hayek. And he explores how that value is coming under pressure from terrorist threats, macroeconomic crisis, pandemics, autocratic populism, and climate change.

  The Brexit referendum, which took place on June 23, 2016, marked a pivotal moment in the history of the United Kingdom and its relationship with the European Union. The decision to leave the EU, known as Brexit, came after years of mounting debate and growing division within British society and politics. The referendum was the result of a long-standing debate over the UK’s membership in the European Union, with political, economic, and cultural tensions playing a central role in shaping the outcome. 
  The road to Brexit began long before the referendum vote. The United Kingdom joined the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1973, a precursor to the European Union, and since then, the nation’s relationship with the organization has been fraught with disagreement. Euroscepticism, or skepticism about the benefits of EU membership, had been steadily rising, particularly among certain political groups and sections of the public. Critics of the EU argued that membership undermined national sovereignty and that the UK was bound by regulations and policies that did not align with its interests. This sentiment was exacerbated by issues such as immigration, trade regulations, and the financial burden of contributing to the EU budget. 
  In the years leading up to the referendum, the political landscape of the UK began to shift. The rise of UKIP (the United Kingdom Independence Party), led by Nigel Farage, brought the issue of EU membership into sharper focus. UKIP’s success in the 2014 European Parliament elections, where it emerged as the largest UK party, put pressure on the Conservative Party to address the growing concerns over the EU. Prime Minister David Cameron, seeking to quell dissent within his own party and avoid a potential electoral challenge from UKIP, promised a referendum on EU membership in 2013. This pledge set the stage for the referendum that would ultimately decide the UK’s fate within the EU.
