Sinopse

The author has taken a serious subject in the history of Ireland and as always masterfully presented it in a funny, ironic and entertaining way. This historical novel is a story of four generations of Rackrent heirs told in the voice of their longtime steward, Thady Quirk. The story gives us a satirical view of the decline and fall of a noble Irish house into poverty through drinking, extravagant living and a wild passion for loosing cases at law. Through the stories of different generations of the same family, each presents an example of the irresponsible Irish gentry.

Throughout history, cities have risen and fallen, some leaving behind monumental legacies while others have vanished into myth. The allure of lost cities has captivated imaginations across generations, often blending history with legend. These fabled metropolises, shrouded in mystery and time, offer tantalizing glimpses into what might have been—magnificent civilizations, advanced technologies, and vibrant cultures. Whether concealed beneath the sands of the desert, submerged under the sea, or hidden deep in the jungles, the idea of cities lost to time speaks to humanity's eternal quest for discovery and our fascination with the past.
The mystery of lost cities invites both scholars and adventurers to uncover what lies beneath the surface of ancient tales. It fuels our imagination, as each lost city becomes a puzzle—fragments of architecture, scattered relics, and half-forgotten stories that promise to reveal something transformative. But beyond mere exploration, these cities often represent something deeper: the fragility of human ambition, the impermanence of power, and the profound impact of time on civilization. In this quest to resurrect ancient urban centers, we see not just the history of the cities themselves, but also reflections of our own desires and dreams for immortality.

Most Americans were shocked by the violence they witnessed at the nation's Capital on January 6th, 2021. And many were bewildered by the images displayed by the insurrectionists: a wooden cross and wooden gallows; "Jesus saves" and "Don't Tread on Me;" Christian flags and Confederate Flags; even a prayer in Jesus's name after storming the Senate chamber. Where some saw a confusing jumble, Philip S. Gorski and Samuel L. Perry saw a familiar ideology: white Christian nationalism.

Gorski and Perry explain what white Christian nationalism is; when it first emerged and how it has changed; where it's headed and why it threatens democracy. Tracing the development of this ideology over the course of three centuries—and especially its influence over the last three decades—they show how, throughout American history, white Christian nationalism has animated the oppression, exclusion, and even extermination of minority groups while securing privilege for white Protestants. It enables white Christian Americans to demand "sacrifice" from others in the name of religion and nation, while defending their "rights" in the names of "liberty" and "property."

The future of American democracy will depend on whether a broad spectrum of Americans can unite in a popular front to combat the threat to liberal democracy posed by white Christian nationalism.

Jnana Yoga - The Path of Knowledge

Jnana Yoga, often referred to as the "Path of Knowledge," is one of the four primary paths of yoga in the ancient tradition of Vedanta. The word “Jnana” comes from the Sanskrit root “jñā,” meaning knowledge, and Jnana Yoga is specifically concerned with the cultivation of wisdom and the realization of the ultimate truth of existence. Unlike the more physical paths like Hatha Yoga, Jnana Yoga focuses on intellectual discernment and meditation as tools to break through the illusion of the material world and achieve spiritual enlightenment.
At the heart of Jnana Yoga lies the pursuit of self-inquiry and the question, "Who am I?" This path asserts that ultimate knowledge, or liberation (moksha), can only be attained by understanding the true nature of oneself, and by discerning the difference between the transient, material world (Maya) and the eternal reality (Brahman). Jnana Yoga emphasizes the principle of non-duality, or Advaita, which teaches that the individual self (Atman) is ultimately one with the divine (Brahman). This realization dispels the illusion of separation between the self and the universe.
The path of Jnana Yoga is often described as a mental discipline that requires intense study, reflection, and meditation. It is traditionally taught by a guru, or spiritual teacher, who guides the seeker in their quest for self-knowledge. The guru's role is to help the student distinguish between the real and the unreal, encouraging them to look beyond their attachments, desires, and egos. Scriptures like the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and other Vedantic texts are central to Jnana Yoga, providing the philosophical foundation for its practices.
