Adapted from the 2015 book Bad Uber, an unintentional antiwork novel. A true account of leaving a worthy career to join the gig economy.
As the Uber phenomenon takes over London with its minicab booking app, destroying the trade of the world-famous black cab, trampling history under wheel and smashing prices, Charles Brickfield brings us the life of an Uber driver.
This audiobook tracks his first fifty days - from complete novice, to the Christmas party season and New Year's Eve, through to the so called 'Kipper Season'. Brim full of anecdotes delivered with pathos and humour in equal measure, Brickfield offers an authentic voice, not a cynic, just one of the thousands who needed a job and chose to work the night shift, to tickle London’s underbelly as time is called at the bar. Brickfield may be an inept driver, but he is an extremely adept author.
As we speak, the map of London is live and the giant game of cat and mouse is in play.
Five stars, old boy! Thanks for the ride.

In 66 BC, young, ambitious Julius Caesar, seeking recognition and authority, became the curator of the Via Appia. He borrowed significant sums to restore the ancient highway. It was a way to curry favor from Roman citizens in villages along the route, built from Rome to Brindisi between 312-191 BC. After achieving greatness in Rome and the far reaches of Gaul, he led armies along this road to battle enemies in Roman civil wars. And then, across the Adriatic Sea, he joined Via Appia's sister road, the Via Egnatia that began in today's Albania. Other armies followed these two roads that eventually connected Rome to Byzantium, today's Istanbul. In the early second century AD, the emperor Trajan charted a new coastal route between Benevento and Brindisi, later called the Via Traiana.Today, short stretches of the original three roads can be seen in the ruins of ancient Roman cities, now preserved as archaeological wonders, and through the countryside near, and sometimes under, modern highways. Following those routes is the purpose of treading along the path that Caesar and so many others took over the early centuries. Modern eyes, seeing through the mists of more than two thousand years of history, lead the traveler along these three roads coursing through six countries between Rome and Istanbul.

The inspiration for the PBS Masterpiece series, The Durrells in Corfu: A naturalist’s childhood adventures with animals—and humans—on a Greek island. For a passionate animal lover like young Gerald Durrell, the island in the Ionian Sea was a natural paradise, teeming with strange birds and beasts. As he writes . . . “To me, this blue kingdom was a treasure house of strange beasts which I longed to collect and observe, and at first it was frustrating for I could only peck along the shoreline like some forlorn seabird, capturing the small fry in the shallows and occasionally being tantalized by something mysterious and wonderful cast up on the shore. But then I got my boat, the good ship Bootle Bumtrinket, and so the whole of this kingdom was opened up for me, from the golden red castles of rock and their deep pools and underwater caves in the north to the long, glittering white sand dunes lying like snowdrifts in the south.” The final entry in Durrell’s Corfu Trilogy, Fauna and Family shows what life was like for a child in a different time and a different culture just before World War II. It also sheds light on the man who would one day become an iconic wildlife preservationist.Previously published as The Garden of the Gods“[Durrell's] writing is nimble, witty and irreverent, warm but not remotely sentimental.” —Los Angeles Times
