Sinopse

Skyscraper Wind Design examines the critical interplay between wind and tall buildings, offering insights for creating resilient high-rise structures. It highlights how early skyscrapers faced wind-related challenges, leading to retrofits and failures, while modern design employs wind tunnel testing and computational modeling for proactive solutions. The book stresses the importance of integrating architectural aesthetics with structural engineering to create safe, sustainable, and economically viable skyscrapers.

The book progresses from fundamental aerodynamic principles to design strategies like aerodynamic shaping and damping systems. Emphasizing a holistic approach, it uniquely combines quantitative data from wind tunnel tests with qualitative design principles. For example, the orientation and spacing of buildings in urban planning significantly impacts wind patterns.

The book analyzes wind tunnel testing, compares structural systems under wind loads, and studies iconic skyscrapers. It is a resource for architects and engineers, promoting innovation and resilience in the built environment by addressing ongoing debates, such as the balance between structural stiffness and flexibility.

    Creative Evolution

    Henri Bergson

Henri Bergson’s highly influential book, ‘Creative Evolution’ (‘Evolution Creatrice’, 1907) established a theory of evolution - called ‘Creative Evolution Theory’ - which gained a considerable following in the first half of the 20th Century. It also helped the author to win the Nobel Prize in 1927 for his work investigating the origins of biological information and divergence in the evolutionary process.

In this work, Bergson seeks an alternative explanation as to how new forms of life emerge compared to those prevailing at the time. This included both the ‘mechanistic’ or deterministic explanations of biological science on the one hand, and on the other the ‘finalist’ or strictly teleological explanation of those who believed in the hand of a ‘Creator’ or God, coordinating life in a divine plan.

Creative Evolution proposes a third explanation in what Bergson calls élan vital’ or ‘vital impetus’, a force that infuses all matter and drives it forward into an ever-changing and infinite variety of living forms. This appears as a vital impetus that can also be related to humanity’s own creative life force. Bergson’s book builds on his ‘Theory of Time’ as set forth in works such as ‘Matter and Memory’ and ‘Time and Free Will’. In these works, and in the present volume, Bergson sees continuous ‘duration’ as real time, as opposed to the way in which time is divided up into measured units by the ‘organising’ mind of science.

Life, as we really experience it, is subject to constant change and our tendency to explain evolutionary change by looking only at ‘ends’ achieved rather than the processes by which they emerge, divorces us from the life force itself.

Instead, Bergson feels we need to reengage with our instincts as well as with our intelligence in order to understand the evolutionary process, as both co-exist to some extent within us, all forms of life having a common origin in that instinctual, innate knowledge of simpler life forms. Though these may be unconscious or semi-conscious, they are, in Bergson’s view, much more in touch with the ever-changing nature of real time than the analytical and rational knowledge of our species

As he writes: “Our thought, in its purely logical form, is incapable of presenting the true nature of life, the full meaning of the evolutionary movement. Created by life, in definite circumstances, to act on definite things, how can it embrace life, of which it is only an emanation or an aspect?”

It is to attempt an answer to this question that ‘Creative Evolution’ directs its attention.

‘Windswept is a wonderful work, prose painted in bold, bright strokes like a Scottish Colourist's canvas’ ROBERT MACFARLANE
‘An instant classic of British nature-writing’ SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
A few years ago, Annie Worsley traded a busy life in academia to take on a small-holding or croft on the west coast of Scotland. It is a land ruled by great elemental forces – light, wind and water – that hold sway over how land forms, where the sea sits and what grows. Windswept explores what it means to live in this rugged, awe-inspiring place of unquenchable spirit and wild weather.
Walk with Annie as she lays quartz stones in the river to reflect the moonlight and attract salmon, as she watches otters play tag across the beach, as she is awoken by the feral bellowing of stags. Travel back in time to the epic story of how Scotland’s valleys were carved by glaciers, rivers scythed paths through mountains, how the earliest people found a way of life in the Highlands – and how she then found a home there millennia later.
With stunning imagery and lyrical prose, Windswept evokes a place where nature reigns supreme and humans must learn to adapt. It is her paean to a beloved place, one richer with colour, sound and life than perhaps anywhere else in the UK.
Annie Worsley's Windswept is a top-tier memoir that intertwines personal narratives with the history of Britain's ecosystems. Her commitment to environmental conservation and habitat protection is evident throughout, making this autobiography a must-read for those interested in European non-fiction.
For fans of Robert Macfarlane (Is a River Alive?), Raynor Winn (Landlines), Robin Wall Kimmerer (The Democracy of Species), Sharon Blackie (The Enchanted Life), and Chloe Dalton (Raising Hare).

The Smokies are ancient mountains covered by forests that are never still.

Ridges erode. Streams cut hollows. Trees fall and return. Fire, insects, weather, migration, and human use continually reshape a landscape often romanticized as timeless.

William Stanek's The Living Great Smoky Mountains Biography follows ancient geology, extraordinary forest life, Cherokee continuity, mountain communities, logging, land acquisition, displacement, national-park creation, ecological restoration, wildlife return, and the continuing pressures placed upon America's most familiar Appalachian park.

This is not a story of empty wilderness finally saved.

It is a biography of mountains long inhabited, worked, loved, altered, protected, and remembered-and of forests whose apparent permanence is built from constant renewal.
