Sinopse

"World War 1" explores the origins, events, and consequences of the global conflict that reshaped the 20th century. Delving into the intricate web of alliances, imperial ambitions, and nationalist fervor, the book analyzes how the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand ignited a war marked by brutal trench warfare and unprecedented technological advancements in military history. It reveals how the war acted as a significant turning point, ending the old world order and ushering in an era of global interconnectedness and international conflict. The book examines the underlying causes, major battles such as the Marne, Verdun, and the Somme, and the profound transformations resulting from the war, including the Treaty of Versailles. It further highlights the role of nationalism, militarism, and imperialism in creating a hostile environment in Europe. Drawing upon primary and secondary sources, the book provides a comprehensive account of the war, emphasizing its interconnected aspects and long-term consequences, while also addressing controversies surrounding the Treaty of Versailles. The book's approach is designed to be accessible to a broad audience. The book begins by examining the political and social landscape of Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, tracing the events that led to war. It then analyzes the strategies employed during major battles and concludes by exploring the war's consequences, including the reshaping of the global map. This exploration aims to deepen the reader's understanding of the past and its relevance to the present, making the books content valuable for those interested in World History and Military History.

A homicide crisis began sweeping America after massive quantities of cocaine first began their journey into America in 1986. Drugs were trucked along the highways of the Cocaine Trail to every city in America. This influx of a deadly new drug led directly to a series of record deaths from overdoses, suicides and crime-related murders, family breakdowns and destroyed lives. Drugs are credited with driving the highest homicide rates in American history and a raging turf war between street gangs.

Crack cocaine unleashed a brutal era of violence, placing newspapers under
enormous pressure to provide coverage. Relations with police were breaking down everywhere and crime coverage was in its death throes. Newspapers could not cover the homicides or give any context or explanations to such a social upheaval. Editors, reporters and police now reveal the shocking truth behind this agonizing episode in American history, when crime reporters had to re-invent journalism to get behind the police blue code. This book combines investigative journalism and narrative style to produce a rare portrait from within the secret inner world of newspapers.

In 1494, there were five sovereign regional powers in Italy: Milan, Venice, Florence, the Papal States and Naples. In 1536, only one remained: Venice. These decades of conflict precipitated great anxiety among Western thinkers, and Italians responded to the fragmentation of Latin Christendom, the end of self-governance for Italians, and the beginning of the early modern era in various ways. They were always heavily influenced by the lived experience of warfare between large Christian armies on the peninsula. The diplomatic and military history of this 30-year period is a complex one that one eminent Renaissance historian, Lauro Martines, has described as "best told by a computer, so many and tangled are the treatises, negotiations and battles." At the same time, the fighting went in tandem with the Renaissance and was influenced by it.
Before 1494, death tolls were counted in hundreds rather than thousands, but that would change over the next generation, and among the many battles fought, few stood out like the Battle of Ravenna in 1512. Ravenna is an ancient city in northern Italy on the Adriatic Coast that replaced Rome as capital of the Western Roman Empire for much of the 5th century and continued to serve as a regional center for its successor states, including the Ostrogoths, Byzantines, and Papal States. On April 11 of that year, two great armies met near Ravenna, which had been the site of conflict at least six times before on account of its strategic importance. It was a well-protected city with connections to rich Mediterranean ports, and it guarded the routes to central and southern Italy. Over 44,000 troops gathered, a vast number for the time, to fight over Italy’s destiny, which had become important to France, Austria, and Spain, the great powers of the time.
