Sinopse

Latin American Staples explores how fundamental ingredients like beans, corn, and peppers have profoundly shaped Latin American cuisine, culture, and history. These staple foods aren't just ingredients; they're the very foundation of regional identities and economies. Consider corn: it was so central to Mesoamerican civilizations that the Mayan and Aztec cultures incorporated it into religious beliefs and agricultural practices, becoming essential to their daily lives. Similarly, the book traces the domestication of beans in the Andes and their spread, highlighting their adaptation to diverse climates and their crucial role in indigenous diets. The book uniquely centers its narrative on these staples themselves, rather than specific dishes or chefs, offering a comprehensive look at their historical and cultural significance.

Beginning with an introduction to staple foods and their origins, the book then delves into the roles of corn in Mesoamerica, beans across the Andes, and peppers throughout Latin America. It also examines the Columbian Exchange and its impact on culinary traditions. By exploring indigenous knowledge, colonial influences, and modern practices, Latin American Staples provides a nuanced understanding of Latin American identity and addresses contemporary challenges like climate change and sustainable agriculture.

Francisco Villa, better known as Pancho Villa, was a key figure in the Mexican Revolution, known for his transformation from a bandit to one of the revolution’s most influential commanders. Villa’s rise to prominence in the early 20th century marked him as a central player in the violent upheavals that reshaped Mexico’s political landscape. In 1911, Villa became a significant actor in the revolutionary violence that led to the overthrow of President Porfirio Díaz, ushering in Francisco I. Madero’s government. Villa, initially a leader of outlaw groups, aligned himself with Madero’s revolutionary cause, contributing to the instability that culminated in the fall of Díaz’s long-standing dictatorship.
The power dynamics in the revolution shifted again when General Victoriano Huerta attempted a right-wing coup in February 1913. As Madero’s government crumbled under Huerta’s forces, Madero led anti-Huerta soldiers in the Constitutionalist Army from 1913 to 1914. The civilian governor of Coahuila, Venustiano Carranza, became the leader of this anti-Huerta coalition. After Huerta’s eventual defeat and exile in July 1914, Villa and Carranza began to diverge politically. Villa, alongside other revolutionary leaders, assembled a gathering of generals in a bid to form a new government, but the resulting coalition was weak and inefficient. Though Villa and Emiliano Zapata, another revolutionary leader, were formally allied during this period, their partnership was largely theoretical. Both men supported land reform, but Villa’s reforms remained unrealized during his tenure of influence.

In a time that rewards personality and platform over integrity and character, author Chuck DeGroat invites us to return to the humble work of deep, lasting transformation. We have more insights and resources for emotional and spiritual health than ever before, yet it takes one look at the headlines―and even our own lives―to see that true depth of character is still lacking. From the broken trust in the highest political, corporate, and ecclesial offices in the land to the broken places in our own hearts, we’re facing a profound unveiling. How can we ever really know who to count on? How do we make sense of it all? And in a day of quick comebacks and empty apologies, how does slow and lasting change take place? It won’t be easy, but it will be sacred. Combining rich cultural analysis with pastoral and psychological wisdom, therapist and professor Chuck DeGroat invites us beyond techniques and tactics to offer a revolutionary, hopeful new guide for building the internal and external architecture for deep and sustaining character change. In Who You’re Becoming, we’ll:gently confront the ways we’ve traded character for charisma, formation for information, communion for control, discipleship for displaythink clearly and carefully about how Christlike character grows and matures―in our personal lives, parenting, church and spiritual formation processes, even educational spacesexplore new discoveries in psychology and neurobiology that reveal how character breaks down―and how it can be rebuiltengage ancient and contemporary processes and practices that cultivate strong friendships, grounded leaders, connected marriages, healthy systems, anchored identity, and creative workThe temptation to posture is strong, but the invitation of Christ is deeper still. It’s an invitation not to perform, but to become ourselves: rooted, ripened, and resilient in a fractured and fragmented world.
