Sinopse

"Written in the heat of battle and the halls of power—the ultimate guide to mastering your mind."

Meditations is a collection of twelve books containing the private thoughts of the most powerful man in the ancient world. Writing to himself as a form of spiritual exercise, Marcus Aurelius explores how to remain virtuous in a world of vice, how to find tranquility in the face of death, and how to perform one's duty without complaint. He argues that while we cannot control external events, we have absolute power over our own thoughts and reactions. This isn't just a book of philosophy; it is a practical blueprint for living a life of purpose, integrity, and calm.

The Core Principles of Stoicism: Through pithy aphorisms and deep introspection, Aurelius focuses on the concept of the Amor Fati (love of fate) and the Dichotomy of Control. He reminds himself—and the reader—that everything is change, and that the only thing that truly matters is the quality of one's character.

A Leader's Inner Battle: Unlike other philosophical texts, Meditations is deeply personal. It captures an emperor reminding himself to be patient with "tiresome people," to avoid the temptations of fame, and to stay grounded in the present moment. It remains a favorite of world leaders, athletes, and entrepreneurs for its brutal honesty and practical application.

Why It Matters Today: In an age of constant distraction and anxiety, Marcus Aurelius's words are more relevant than ever. He teaches us that "the happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts" and provides the tools to build an "inner citadel" that no external force can break.

Srimad Bhagavatam is the most prominent of the Puranas, or histories of the Ancient World. The original Sanskrit text of the work, penned by the great sage Vyasadeva, states that it is 'as brilliant as the sun' because its teachings can illuminate our consciousness even in the darkest times. Much like the Arabian Nights, it has an intricate structure of stories within stories; epic tales of divine incarnations, saints, sages, gods and earthly kings that span vast periods of time. This volume introduces the foundational story: a conversation among many learned sages and yogis at the holy site of Naimisharanya.
Srimad Bhagavatam describes how the earth goes through cyclical ages, much like the four seasons of a year. Five thousand years ago, the world entered the most terrible of the four ages, otherwise known as Kali Yuga, or the ‘Age of Quarrel and Hypocrisy’. This era is characterised by terrific acts of violence such as large-scale animal slaughter, systematic destruction of the planet's food supplies, and the merciless affliction of civilian populations by warlords and governments alike. All of this leads to escalating miseries as the dreadful age unfolds.
Aware of our impending plight through prophetic visions, the compassionate sages of Naimisharanya seek a way to help us. One of their number, Suta Goswami, goes in search of a solution and encounters a dialogue between an emperor cursed to die and a great mystic. From this discussion, Suta discovers how anyone, no matter how drastic their circumstances, can transcend their misery and experience boundless joy by comprehending the science of God and the soul. He returns to the sages and faithfully repeats the secrets he has heard, and this becomes the Srimad Bhagavatam. Described as the "literary incarnation of God", Srimad Bhagavatam elevates its sincere readers to pure spiritual consciousness, beyond the reach of all misery.

Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman empire from AD 161-180. He wrote the 12 books of the Meditations as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova and the second book was written at Carnuntum. It is unlikely that Marcus Aurelius ever intended the writings to be published and the work has no official title, so "Meditations" is one of several titles commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs.George Long Translation

Bob Dylan is an iconic American artist, whose music and performances have long reflected different musical genres and time periods. His songs tell tales of the Civil War, harken back to 1930s labor struggles, and address racial violence at the height of the civil rights movement, helping listeners to think about history, and history making, in new ways. While Dylan was warned by his early mentor, Dave Van Ronk, that, "You’re just going to be a history book writer if you do those things. An anachronism," the musician has continued to traffic in history and engage with a range of source material—ancient and modern—over the course of his career.

In this beautifully crafted book, Freddy Cristóbal Domínguez makes a provocative case for Dylan as a historian, offering a deep consideration of the musician's historical influences and practices. Utilizing interviews, speeches, and the close analysis of lyrics and live performances, Bob Dylan in the Attic is the first book to consider Dylan's work from the point of view of historiography.
