  ""The Art of War" is a treatise by the Italian Renaissance political philosopher and historian Niccolò Machiavelli. Written between 1519 and 1520, it was published the following year and remains one of his most important works. Unlike the more widely read "The Prince" and "The Discourses", this book focuses specifically on military matters.    Here are the key features of "The Art of War":    Format: The book takes the form of a Socratic dialogue. Lord Fabrizio Colonna, perhaps Machiavelli's persona, declares the purpose at the outset: "To honor and reward virtù, not to have contempt for poverty, to esteem the modes and orders of military discipline, to constrain citizens to love one another, to live without factions, to esteem less the private than the public good." The military is likened to the roof of a palazzo protecting its contents.  Setting: The dialogues occur in the Orti Oricellari, classical-style gardens built by Bernardo Rucellai in the 1490s for Florentine aristocrats and humanists. The discussions take place between Cosimo Rucellai and "Lord Fabrizio Colonna," with other patrizi and captains of the recent Florentine republic.  Fabrizio's Wisdom: Fabrizio is enamored with the Roman Legions of the early to mid Roman Republic. He advocates adapting their strategies to the contemporary situation of Renaissance Florence. His knowledge dominates the discussions, often turning them into monologues where he details how an army should be raised, trained, organized, deployed, and employed.  Practical Insights: Machiavelli's theories are not merely theoretical; they are based on his observations during his fourteen years as secretary to the Chancery of Florence. He reported on the size, composition, weaponry, morale, and logistical capabilities of the most effective militaries of his day.  "The Art of War" serves as a guide to military leaders, including Frederick the Great and Napoleon, and remains an authoritative treatise on the fundamentals of warfare. Its clear and concise style stands in contrast to that of "The Prince"."

  Completing the Meiji Restoration that heralded the dawn of a new era for both Japan and Asia, the island nation found itself thrust into the modern world, a world of industry and conquest. Flexing its new muscles, the burgeoning power soon came to blows with the regional power that for centuries dominated the area politically and culturally: China. In its first modern war, the modernized Japanese empire went to war against the dominant power in the region, and though interested Western powers favored China, Japan won the day, claiming Korea as their conquest and permanently upsetting the balance of power in the region. The conflict paved the way for the future Empire of Japan and the collapse of the Qing Dynasty. 
  Though both nations modernized, and China far outweighed Japan in terms of men and materiel potential, the island nation handily won its first modern war. The conflict resulted in Japan’s short-term gains in the wake of victory, and the long term disaster for both sides’ new roles in Asia, for with the end of Chinese dominance in East Asia came a new era for the region as a whole, an era whose consequences and horrors would not be fully realized for several more decades. 
  In 1937, the Empire of Japan once more went to war with China, a nation broken into petty warlord fiefdoms and wracked by civil war. The most modern Asian nation enacted a brutal campaign over the fragmented realms that made up China, committing atrocities just as horrendous as their Axis ally in Europe. Despite this, the sheer size of China, coupled with Japan’s overextension, allowed the larger, less developed nation to endure.

  A Mysterious Group of People came to settle in southern Mesopotamia, sometime around 5400BC. What is now the modern state of Iraq, the first city of Mesopotamia was founded named Eridu. Although historians have generally regarded this as the world’s first city, we have seen this challenged on numerous occasions by recent discoveries too numerous to mention here. Eridu had all the things we ordinarily associate with an ancient city: temples, administrative buildings, housing, agriculture, markets, art, and, of course, walls to keep out unsavoury characters.The elusive aspect is we have absolutely no idea where they acquired their language, and bizarre language it is, we have no idea what they originally looked like. Their language, which we call Sumerian, and the subsequent Akkadian derivative were linguistic isolates. Sumerian is the oldest known written language on Earth, and any languages it might have derived from or developed alongside have been lost to time. Figuring out what their baffling ethnic identity based on their art is a doomed effort, because their art was so stylized that a good case could be made that it portrays people of any ethnicity, or the people they encountered. The Sumerian language was not Semitic, and the Akkadian conquests of 2334 BCE disrupted the ethnic and cultural isolation of the Sumerian people.
