After a boozy Oxford reunion, Bognor is distressed to learn one of his classmates is a killer. Nothing depresses Simon Bognor like a university reunion. Every pimply-faced boy he knew two decades prior has made something of himself, while Bognor languishes at the Board of Trade, muddling along in an investigatory position for which he is hideously unqualified. Although more often than not his job requires catching murderers, he lacks even the observational powers to notice when the head of his old college has been poisoned. Both quite drunk, they totter off to their respective beds. Bognor makes it, but the master doesn't - he collapses dead at the top of the stairs. Due to the dead man's ties to the government, Bognor is asked to sort out who did him in. At long last he has the opportunity to prove himself at his old college—but Bognor knows it is just as likely that he will end up in the dunce's cap. Ron Green had made a mistake, but it wasn't one that millions of other guys hadn't made before him. And maybe he deserved some sort of punishment, like his wife leaving him or his kids hating his guts. But this? Being the main suspect in a single murder was bad enough, but at the same time knowing he was a potential victim of a serial killer was even worse. However, before Green could convince the cops of his innocence, he first had to convince them the serial killer existed, and now they weren't believing a thing he said. About Kevin R. Clarence Aaron Robbins was born in Brooklyn in the United States on the 25th June 1888. His billing sometimes cited him as C A Robbins but he was better known as Tod Robbins. Information on him is either scant or unreliable. He did attend Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia and wrote the words to the popular college song ‘Washington & Lee Swing’ published in 1910. As an author he wrote two short story collections as well as several novels and his often bizarre premises and settings offer genuine thrills and mystery. His works were frequently anthologized and popular in the many pulp magazines of the era. His short story ‘Spurs’ was adapted by the director Tod Browning for his Universal cult film classic ‘Freaks’ in 1932. Robbins left New York to emigrate to the French Riviera but was later caught up in the Second World War. After the Nazi occupation he refused to leave and spent the remainder of the war in a concentration camp. Tod Robbins died in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on 10th May 1949 at the age of 60.Show book
