Sinopse

In "Menasseh ben Israel's Mission to Oliver Cromwell," the author explores a pivotal moment in 17th-century history when Manasseh ben Israel, a leading Jewish scholar and thinker, sought to advocate for the readmittance of Jews to England after centuries of expulsion. This work intricately documents ben Israel's diplomatic efforts and theological arguments to persuade Cromwell to allow Jewish resettlement. Blending history with personal narrative, ben Israel's eloquent Latin prose captures the urgency of his mission, mirroring the socio-political upheavals of the time while offering poignant insights into the Jewish experience in early modern Europe. Manasseh ben Israel was a significant figure in Jewish scholarship, a prolific writer whose works spanned religious texts and philosophical treatises. His engagement with Cromwell reflects not only his commitment to the Jewish community but also a broader desire for religious tolerance in a Europe rife with division. His background as a Sephardic Jew who experienced the ramifications of exile and hardship deeply influenced his resolute advocacy for justice and recognition. This book is a crucial resource for historians, theologians, and anyone interested in the complexities of Jewish identity in early modern Europe. It reveals the intricate interplay between faith and politics, making it an enlightening read for those who wish to understand the roots of religious tolerance and the Jewish diaspora's struggles during this significant historical period.

Corpse Care - Ethics for Tending...

Corpse Care relates the history of death care in the US to craft robust, constructive, practical ethics for tending the dead. It specifically relates corpse care to economic, environmental, and pastoral concerns.

Death and the treatment of the dead body loom large in our collective, cultural consciousness. The authors explore the materiality and meaning of the dead body and the living's relationship to it. All the biggest questions facing the planetary human community relate in one way or another to the corpse. Surprisingly, Christian communities are largely missing in the discussion of the dead, having abdicated the historic role in care for the dead to the funeral industry. Christianity has stopped its reflection about the body once that body no longer bears life. Corpse Care stakes a claim that the fact of embodiment, this incarnational truth, this process of our bodily becoming, is a practical, ethical, and theological necessity.

    Ancient Mediterranean Cuisine:...

Despite the strides made in understanding ancient history, there are obvious difficulties in assessing what ancient societies ate and drank, even as advances in technology continue to open up new methods of analysis for food deposits in human remains and archaeological sites. In general, the majority of what ancient individuals ate did not last long, but it’s clear that the fundamental necessity to secure basic food requirements colored all aspects of life, including politics, and only societies that produced enough food to achieve a surplus could turn their attention to matters other than simple survival. For example, one of the most noteworthy things about Egypt was the grain production there, and that was the context in which the Egyptians’ advancements in art, culture, and science became possible.
Since food is a biological necessity for everyone, eating and drinking are often at the very center of social life. This was no different in ancient Greece, but, if anything, the social importance placed on food and wine in the Greek world was even more pronounced and had profound consequences for the rest of the world. As one modern historian aptly put it, “How classical Athens was fed is not a matter of marginal importance. Nothing less than the material base of a brilliant civilization is at issue.” Indeed, it was through the ability to create a food surplus that the ancient Greeks were able to establish their poleis and, from these, go on to develop the political and social structures that built the backbone of Western Civilization.
Indulgence is at the heart of modern perceptions of eating and drinking for the ancient Romans. The majority of primary sources depicting food and drink that have survived show rich patricians reclining at a table loaded with exotic foods, and Roman diners are often depicted as gorging themselves over numerous courses served over many hours.

The Rule of Law - A Very Short...

Politicians, judges, and citizens commonly use the phrase "rule of law" to describe some good that flows from a legal system. But what precisely is that good? Even in Aristotle's time, there was no agreement on either its nature, and on whether it counted as an unqualified good. Even now, a core rule-of-law aspiration is that law can constrain how power is flexed. But how or when? Disagreement persists as to whether the rule of law is a matter of how law is used or why it is deployed. In consequence, the World Bank, the leaders of Singapore's one-party state, and the Communist Party in China can all offer their own spins on the concept.

By charting these disagreements and showing the overlap and the conflicts between different understandings of the concept, Aziz Z. Huq shows how the rule of law can still be used as an important tool for framing and evaluating the goals and functions of a legal system. He traces the idea's historical origins from ancient Greece to the constitutional theorist Albert Venn Dicey to the economist and political philosopher Friedrich Hayek. And he explores how that value is coming under pressure from terrorist threats, macroeconomic crisis, pandemics, autocratic populism, and climate change.

Theogony & Works and Days by Hesiod are foundational texts of ancient Greek literature, offering a powerful blend of myth, morality, and early philosophical thought.
In Theogony, Hesiod presents the first systematic account of Greek mythology, tracing the origins of the cosmos and the genealogy of the gods—from Chaos and Gaia to Zeus and the Olympian order. Through vivid storytelling and poetic structure, the poem explores themes of power, succession, and divine justice, shaping the mythological framework that influenced Western literature for millennia.
Works and Days shifts from cosmic myth to human life, combining practical instruction with moral reflection. Addressed to Hesiod’s brother Perses, the poem offers guidance on labor, agriculture, justice, and proper conduct, while weaving in myths such as Pandora and the Ages of Man. It stands as one of the earliest surviving works of ethical and didactic literature.
Together, these works reveal how the ancient Greeks understood the universe, the gods, and humanity’s place between divine order and mortal struggle. This audiobook brings Hesiod’s enduring poetry to life for modern listeners, preserving the wisdom and imagination of one of antiquity’s earliest voices.
