Meditations is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy.Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the second book was written at Carnuntum. It is unlikely that Marcus Aurelius ever intended the writings to be published and the work has no official title, so "Meditations" is one of several titles commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs. The Meditations is divided into 12 books that chronicle different periods of Aurelius' life. Each book is not in chronological order and it was written for no one but himself. The style of writing that permeates the text is one that is simplified, straightforward, and perhaps reflecting Aurelius' Stoic perspective on the text. Depending on the English translation, Marcus' style is not viewed as anything regal or belonging to royalty, but rather a man among other men, which allows the reader to relate to his wisdom.

There is a huge racial wealth gap in America today. Owning a business is one of the best ways to build wealth—but entrepreneurs need capital. And investing in Black companies is obstructed by systemic racism and implicit biases that continue to create barriers to success.

Merging historical information and data, along with tactical examples and explanations, this practical guide shows us what needs to be done in order to change the way we support Black companies and how we think about wealth.

Norwood calls for investors to move away from extractive, individualistic, exploitative approaches to capital and entrepreneurship. She asks us to move toward transformational, restorative, regenerative, and interdependent relationships to repair the impacts of systemic racism. Investors, large and small, need to say to Black business owners, "we believe in you."

With an entrepreneur-centric approach, Believe-In-You Money challenges the system failure surrounding Black companies. It's a guide on how Black entrepreneurs can be supported in sustainable ways and offers a shift in the way we think about who can be an investor, while aiming to change our personal relationships with money.

Despite huge improvements in human living standards having taken place over the decades, extreme poverty still persists - and the Covid-19 pandemic hasn't helped. Research has found that economic growth is far and away the best reducer of poverty; naturally, the question should be asked, what set of policies is best suited to stimulate economic growth, and thus reduce poverty? The answer proposed in this book is simple: economic liberalism: the philosophy of free trade, secure property rights, business freedom, investment freedom, monetary stability, and limited state ownership of industries. Economic liberalism is yet to reach the world's poorest people and entrepreneurs; while citizens of the rich world enjoy the fruits which competitive marketplaces provide, the poor live under the regulatory clutches of intrusive bureaucracies. Case studies consistently demonstrate that liberalising markets is the best way to support economic growth. Public investment into supporting human infrastructure is definitely necessary as well. However, policymakers should focus especially on improving the efficiency of public services, which requires more than just increasing budgets. The link between foreign aid and economic development is empirically inconclusive.

Rhodes and his Banker is an account of the remarkable friendship between a larger-than-life historical figure and a modest, unassuming banker, both of whom were personally involved in all the major political and financial developments in Southern Africa during the closing decades of the 19th century.
The financial institution that brought diamond and gold magnate Cecil John Rhodes and Sir Lewis Michell together – the Standard Bank – was at the heart of the country's rapid transformation from an agricultural backwater to an industrial powerhouse thanks to the discovery of diamonds and gold. The book chronicles the activities and growth of the bank under the remarkable stewardship of Michell and recounts his role as the trusted confidant of Rhodes.
Michell published the first biography of Rhodes to be written after his death and offers many intriguing insights into the character and motives of one of the most controversial and self-driven of British imperialists. He also did everything he could to fulfil Rhodes's ambition for a united South Africa and played a key role in setting up the world-famous Rhodes Scholarship programme.
Intertwining dual narratives of Rhodes as rapacious entrepreneur with the Standard Bank under Michell tiptoeing in his wake to become the biggest bank in Africa, Steyn recounts how colonialism and capitalism took root in South Africa and Rhodesia.
