Sinopse

Discovering Qatar: A Journey Through Time

In Discovering Qatar: A Journey Through Time, author Majidul Haque takes readers on an insightful tour of Qatar’s rich history, from its ancient roots to its modern cities. The book explores key locations across the peninsula, revealing how each place played a significant role in shaping Qatar's cultural and economic development.

Beginning with the ancient nomadic tribes that inhabited the land and the region’s early trade connections, the book delves into the rise of cities like Doha, Al Wakrah, and Al Khor, which were initially centered around the pearl diving industry. As oil was discovered in Dukhan in the 20th century, the nation’s fortunes changed dramatically, leading to rapid modernization.

Key landmarks, including the UNESCO Heritage site of Al Zubarah and the natural wonder of the Inland Sea, are highlighted, emphasizing Qatar’s blend of heritage and natural beauty. Haque also reflects on the industrial transformation of cities like Mesaieed, and the balance between tradition and innovation in cities like Al Rayyan, home to Qatar’s Education City.

Throughout the book, Haque shows how Qatar, though small in size, has a deep and varied history. He captures the essence of a nation that honors its past while embracing a promising future of economic progress, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability.

Is it too much to ask for an ordinary, boring life?

Bai Jian is a typical Chinese boy growing up in a big city. But his life is far from typical: his mother abandoned him when he was a baby, and his father, Hei Jian, is always out of work, always fighting with his long parade of girlfriends, always getting the two of them involved in some harebrained scheme.

The latest idea involves spending every last dime they have putting Bai Jian up in a posh boarding school so that Hei Jian can leave, and pursue his dream of becoming a big-time movie director. All Bai Jian has ever wanted is a warm bed to sleep in, a safe place to return to at the end of the day, enough food to fill his belly … and a family who’s not just going to abandon him on a whim.

He soon realizes: while he may not have been born into this sort of family, maybe he can find one out there in the world himself?

From author Yao Emei and translator Kelly Zhang comes a heart-rending, emotional middle grade novel about a contemporary boy in China searching for a home—and whose resourcefulness and generous heart carry him through.

The Engineer by Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth - The Big Wheels of tomorrow will be men who can see the big picture. But blowouts have small beginnings....
It was very simple. Some combination of low temperature and high pressure had forced something from the seepage at the ocean bottom into combination with something in the water around them.
And the impregnable armor around Subatlantic Oil's drilling chamber had discovered a weakness.
On the television screen it looked more serious than it was—so Muhlenhoff told himself, staring at it grimly. You get down more than a mile, and you're bound to have little technical problems. That's why deepsea oil wells were still there.
Still, it did look kind of serious. The water driving in the pitted faults had the pressure of eighteen hundred meters behind it, and where it struck it did not splash—it battered and destroyed. As Muhlenhoff watched, a bulkhead collapsed in an explosion of spray; the remote camera caught a tiny driblet of the scattering brine, and the picture in the screen fluttered and shrank, and came back with a wavering side-wise pulse.
Muhlenhoff flicked off the screen and marched into the room where the Engineering Board was waiting in attitudes of flabby panic.
As he swept his hand through his snow-white crew cut and called the board to order a dispatch was handed to him—a preliminary report from a quickly-dispatched company trouble-shooter team. He read it to the board, stone-faced.

The whimsical tale of a witch and an enchanted scarecrow come to life from the otherwise serious author Nathaniel Hawthorne (July 4, 1804 - May 19, 1864), whose themes often center on the inherent evil and sin of humanity. He is best known for The House of the seven Gables and The Scarlet Letter, a story of a proud adulteress sentenced by her stern Puritan judges to wear a scarlet A on her breast, published in 1850. His published works include a biography of his college friend Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States. He died in his sleep in Plymouth, New Hampshire, and four days later he was buried in Concord’s Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, with Longfellow and Emerson among his mourners. Narrator Edward E. French is an Oscar nominee and multiple Emmy Award winner for Special Effects Makeup. Credits at IMDB.com

    YOUNG BLACKBEARD THE PIRATE
    PORT OF BRISTOL 1690
Book 6 of 6 – The Great water balloon ambush
Here is the summary of the Story:
In 1690s Bristol, young Edward Teach (future Blackbeard) leads his crew in their most daring raid yet—ambushing their own parents' picnic with water balloons. After days of restless boredom aboard The Salty Pickle, Edward masterminds the attack: modified spud cannons launch pig-bladder balloons, Charles leads a bucket brigade, and Anne's piercing scream signals the assault. The crew infiltrates the meadow with military precision, soaking the unsuspecting adults in a glorious, chaotic battle. Though initially stunned, the parents join the fun, surrendering their soggy sandwiches with laughter. This final adventure showcases Edward's tactical genius and flair for dramatic command—qualities that would later make him history's most feared pirate. The story blends authentic period details with childhood whimsy, concluding the series by demonstrating how Blackbeard's legendary leadership began with simple backyard adventures and loyal friends who followed him into any mischief.
This is the last of six audiobooks in the series and I do hope you enjoy this final instalment, and it's only $3.
The initial opening credit music which does run to approximately 2 minutes being accordion, fiddle, harmonica and bango in a classical sea shanty jig. The closing music ends the tale on a similar jig and at about 2 minutes with the same musical instruments but more upbeat looking forward to the next episode.
The story itself runs to about 35 minutes is narrated in my own voice.
I do hope you enjoy this audiobook and let me know what you think, there are a lot more to come!

It also serves as a standalone story and also as a great introduction to the series. In KINGS AND SORCERERS, Kyra, 15, dreams of becoming a famed warrior, like her father, even though she is the only girl in a fort of boys. As she struggles to understand her special skills, her mysterious inner power, she realizes she is different than the others. But a secret is being kept from her about her birth and the prophecy surrounding her, leaving her to wonder who she really is. Just as Kyra is coming of age, the local lord comes to take her away. Her father wants to wed her off to save her. Kyra, though, refuses, and she quests on her own, into a dangerous wood, where she encounters a wounded dragon—and ignites a series of events that will change the kingdom forever. 15 year old Alec, meanwhile, sacrifices for his brother, taking his place in the draft, and is carted off to The Flames, a wall of flames a hundred feet high that wards off the army of Trolls to the east. On the far side of the kingdom, Merk, a mercenary striving to leave behind his dark past, quests through the wood to become a Watcher of the Towers and help guard the Sword of Fire, the paranormal source of the kingdom’s power. But the Trolls want the Sword, too—and they prepare for a massive invasion that could destroy the kingdoms forever. With its strong atmosphere and complex characters, RISE OF THE DRAGONS is a sweeping, romantic saga of knights and warriors, of kings and lords, of honor and valor, of magic, action, adventure, destiny, sorcery, monsters and dragons.
