Sinopse

In "Accolon of Gaul, with Other Poems," Madison Julius Cawein crafts a rich tapestry of verse that melds Romantic sensibilities with a keen appreciation for nature and mythology. This collection showcases Cawein's mastery of language, employing vivid imagery and evocative symbolism to explore themes of chivalry, love, and the timeless struggle between good and evil. The titular poem, which draws upon Arthurian legend, serves as a focal point, illustrating not only the heroic journey of Accolon but also the broader quest for identity and moral fortitude within a fantastical backdrop. Cawein's lyrical style, characterized by its musicality and emotional depth, positions the work within the wider context of American Romantic poetry and its preoccupation with mythic subjects and the natural world. Madison Julius Cawein, often referred to as the "Poet of Nature," was an influential figure in the late 19th-century literary scene. His formative years spent in the lush landscapes of Kentucky profoundly shaped his poetic voice, reflecting a deep connection with the environment and an admiration for romantic ideals. Cawein's exploration of folklore and myth was influenced by his extensive reading in both English and American literature, lending his work an intertextual richness that resonates with readers. "Accolon of Gaul, with Other Poems" is a must-read for enthusiasts of Romantic poetry and those captivated by themes of heroism and nature. Whether you are a scholar of literature or a casual reader, Cawein's skillful blending of mythological elements with personal introspection invites all to engage with the deeper questions of existence. This collection will enrich your understanding of American poetry and delight your literary sensibilities.

Chamber Musicby James JoyceNarrated by Denis DalyThis collection of 36 short poems was published in 1907.The title is alleged to be an ironic pun referring cryptically to the sound of urine striking the sides of a chamber pot. However, the poems have no touch of vulgarity or bawdiness. The collection received favorable critical comments from Ezra Pound and W. B. Yeats.Joyce later commented on the poems: "When I wrote Chamber Music, I was a lonely boy, walking about by myself at night and thinking that one day a girl would love me."Production copyright 2024 Voices of Today

John Davidson was born at Barrhead, East Renfrewshire on 11th April 1857.
In 1862 his family moved to Greenock and there he began his education at Highlanders' Academy. Davidson would now spend many years at school and the beginnings of a career in various industries before gaining employment in various schools.
By now literature was a large part of his activities and his first published work was ‘Bruce, A Chronicle Play’ in 1886. Four other plays quickly followed including the somewhat brilliant pantomimic ‘Scaramouch in Naxos’ (1889).
With his reputation gradually providing an income he was also able to explore his true medium; Verse. ‘In a Music Hall and Other Poems’ (1891) together with ‘Fleet Street Eclogues’ (1893) were ample proof that he possessed a quite rare, genuine and distinctive poetic gift.
Davidson now turned further and further towards verse. In 1894 he published his most popular volume, ‘Ballads and Songs’ (1894), and this was followed by a further ‘Fleet Street Eclogues’ (Second Series) (1896) and by ‘New Ballads’ (1897) and ‘The Last Ballad’ (1899).
As the new century dawned Davidson was hard at work on a series of ‘Testaments’, in which he gave definite expression to his philosophy and were published over a seven year period; ‘The Testament of a Vivisector’ (1901), ‘The Testament of a Man Forbid’ (1901), ‘The Testament of an Empire Builder’ (1902), and ‘The Testament of John Davidson’ (1908).
However, on 23rd March 1909, with his finances in ruins, the onset of cancer and profound hopelessness and clinical depression he left his house for the last time. His body was only found on September 18th by some local fishermen.

Composed in two halves, Erica Gillingham's The Human Body is a Hive is a playful and observant reconception of queer love and queer family-making. Opening with a shameless celebration of sex and desire, the collection expands the boundaries of love to include friendship, romance, and lifelong partnership. The latter catalogues the cyclical heartbreaks and wonders of fertility treatment through the microscopic lenses of nature, medicine, and art. Both quietly moving and profoundly celebratory, this exciting debut evokes tenderness and resilience.

The Knotsman does not exist, you will not find him in history books or collections of 'bygone' skills. But Math Jones has created him, and his fellows, in a time very like the English Civil War. There he is, going from house to house, village to village, battlefield to gallows, unravelling knots and problems, physical, emotional and psychological; a new kind of cunning man, not always welcome, not always quite as clever as his fingers and picks would have him believe.
