Sinopse

In "Procrustes; or, the Future of English Education," M. Alderton Pink presents a rigorous examination of the evolving landscape of English education, articulating the challenges and opportunities presented by contemporary pedagogical methods. Employing a critical yet accessible literary style, Pink juxtaposes historical models of education with modern imperatives, drawing inspiration from the mythological figure of Procrustes to explore the tension between standardized curriculums and the individual learning needs of students. Through his nuanced analysis, he questions prevailing educational paradigms and posits a more adaptable framework that promotes critical thinking and creativity. M. Alderton Pink, an esteemed educator and scholar, draws upon his extensive experience in the classroom and educational policy to inform his writing. His keen insight into the educational system—shaped by both his formal training in literature and his grassroots involvement in reform initiatives—fuels his passion for advocating a transformative vision in English education. This background enhances his ability to articulate the urgent need for a shift in teaching methodologies that cater to diverse student experiences. "Procrustes" is an indispensable read for educators, policymakers, and advocates of progressive education reform who seek a deeper understanding of the systemic issues within English education. Pink's compelling arguments and innovative suggestions challenge readers to rethink their assumptions and inspire meaningful change in their approach to teaching and learning.

A New York Times Book Review New & Noteworthy Book
“For democracy’s weary champions, White’s time-tested prose is a shot of adrenaline.”—Madeleine Albright
A collection of essays, letters, and poems from E. B. White, “one of the country’s great literary treasures” (New York Times), centered on the subject of freedom and democracy in America. The special book includes an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jon Meacham.
“I am a member of a party of one, and I live in an age of fear.”
These words were written by E. B. White in 1947. Decades before our current political turmoil, White crafted eloquent yet practical political statements that continue to resonate. “There’s only one kind of press that’s any good—” he proclaimed, “a press free from any taint of the government.” He condemned the trend of defamation, arguing that “in doubtful, doubting days, national morality tends to slip and slide toward a condition in which the test of a man’s honor is his zeal for discovering dishonor in others.” And on the spread of fascism he lamented, “fascism enjoys at the moment an almost perfect climate for growth—a world of fear and hunger.”
This concise collection of essays, letters, and poems from one of this country’s most eminent literary voices offers much-needed historical context for our current state of the nation—and hope for the future of our society. Speaking to Americans at a time of uncertainty, when democracy itself has come under threat, he reminds us, “As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one compassionate woman . . . the scene is not desolate.”

Michael Madhusudan Dutt (1824--1872), a maverick who changed the scope of Bengali poetry in the nineteenth century, especially with his free-verse epic, 'Meghnadhbadh Kabya', was a genius who never got his due. Throughout his life, Madhusudan was caught in an identity crisis: he wrote in the English language, changed his religion and was a restless traveler, yearning to belong somewhere. After an extended sojourn in London and Paris, with misery and poverty as his constant companions, the poet finally found his metier in his mother tongue. Betrayed By Hope, a play-script based on the letters Michael Madhusudan Dutt wrote to friends, well-wishers and patrons, paints the portrait of an artist as he plunges headlong into crisis after crisis, even as his imagination and creativity soar. Namita Gokhale and Malashri Lal pay tribute to his extraordinary life in a story that will lay bare our deep-set contradictions about art and life.

"What Rama says once he carries out; there is no looking back.” Rama to Kaikeyi “Only the timid and the weak leave things to destiny but the strong never bank on destiny or luck.” Lakshmana to RamaThe epic poem, by Maharishi Valmiki Muni, narrates the life of Lord Rama, a legendary prince of Ayodhya city in the kingdom of Kosala. The epic follows his fourteen-year exile to the forest urged by his father King Dasharatha, on the request of Rama's stepmother Kaikeyi. He traveled across forests in the Indian subcontinent with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. Rama endured the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana – the demon king of Lanka, which resulted in a great war; and Rama's eventual return to Ayodhya to be crowned king amidst jubilation and celebration. The Ramayana is one of the ancient epics in world literature consisting of nearly 24,000 verses. It is considered to be the Adi-kavya (first poem) depicting the duties of relationships, portraying ideal characters like the ideal father, ideal servant, ideal brother, ideal husband and ideal king. The Ramayana was an important influence on later Sanskrit poetry and Vedic life and culture. There are many versions of Ramayana in Indian languages, besides Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain adaptations. There are also Cambodian (Reamker), Indonesian, Filipino, Thai (Ramakien), Lao, Burmese and Malay versions of the iconic tale.
