Sinopse

In "Life of David W. Patten, the First Apostolic Martyr," Lycurgus A. Wilson presents a meticulous historical account that intertwines biographical narrative with ecclesiastical history. The work is characterized by its vivid prose and rigorous attention to detail, offering a compelling portrayal of David W. Patten's life, his pivotal role in early Mormonism, and the circumstances surrounding his martyrdom. Set against the backdrop of a tumultuous period in American religious history, Wilson's narrative captures the fervor and conflict of an era marked by both spiritual fervor and societal strife. Lycurgus A. Wilson, a noted scholar of early Mormon history, draws upon extensive archival research, personal letters, and contemporary accounts to illuminate Patten's significance within the Latter-day Saint movement. Wilson's profound understanding of the cultural and theological currents of the 19th century informs his exploration of Patten's faith, character, and ultimate sacrifice, making the text not only a biography but also a reflection on the nature of martyrdom in religious practice. This book is an essential read for scholars of religious history, particularly those interested in early Mormonism. Wilson's thoughtful exposition offers invaluable insights into the formation of Latter-day Saint identity and the sacrifices made by its early leaders. It is a tribute to the legacy of David W. Patten and a compelling narrative that will engage both historians and general readers alike.

The titanic task demanded such character and moral courage from the naval staff in general, and Lieutenant Rios in particular, to allow them to face the challenge successfully. Naval rescuers Rios and Roblero's spirit and their proactive attitude were quickly appreciated and assessed not only by myself, but also everyone who witnessed their conduct during the demanding and arduous training to which they were subjected by the rescuers' team leader, Ovidio Rodriguez, Codelco; as well as their professional work with the miners 620 meters deep. // Finally, such qualities and performance in the rescue would make naval rescuer Rios worthy of the Medal of Bravery awarded by the President of the Republic, in Valparaiso, on May 21st, 2011.

While reading the book Chile 33: Memories of a Rescuer by Lieutenant Roberto Rios Seguel, you will get to know both the man and the spirit of service to the institution he belongs to and surely you will share in my satisfaction of having met him.

"A fiercely honest and beautifully written book." —Paul Austin, author, Beautiful Eyes and Something for the PainA cautionary tale of careless psychiatric diagnosis, treatment, and resilience Sawyer's memoir is a harrowing, heroic, and redeeming story of her battle with mental illness, and her triumph in overcoming it. In 1960, as a suicidal teenager, Sawyer was institutionalized, misdiagnosed, and suffered through 89 electroshock treatments before being transferred, labeled as "unimproved." The damage done has haunted her life. Discharged in 1966, after finally receiving proper psychiatric care, Sawyer kept her past secret and moved on to graduate from Yale University, raise two children, and become a respected psychotherapist. That is, until 2001, when she reviewed her hospital records and began to remember a broken childhood and the even more broken mental health system of the 1950s and 1960s.

Thousands of miles away from where her son was deployed, a powerful premonition is devastatingly confirmed by a knock on the door from two faceless strangers bearing the news that her son had stepped on an improvised explosive device in the poppy fields of Afghanistan. He had lost both of his legs and suffered multiple other injuries, including partial amputation of all the fingers of his left hand. For forty-eight days she stood at his bedside.

Not only did he survive against all odds, but in time he began to test the limits of his new capabilities and undertook the first of, what would prove to be, many physical challenges. Just eighteen months after injury, and as part of a team of four servicemen, he rowed across the Atlantic Ocean for the first time.

Told mostly from a mother's perspective with contributions from Cayle, the genesis of the book was in the diary she kept while he was in a medically induced coma. It is the story of an extraordinarily brave man who has been through the agonies of rebuilding his life, with the encouragement of family and friends.

This was never meant to be another book about war or Afghanistan; it is a message of how love and hope can overcome adversity.

A look at the major events of the twentieth century through the eyes of the man who witnessed it all: celebrated BBC foreign correspondent Charles Wheeler. This audiobook is narrated by his daughter, Shirin Wheeler, and features original audio from Charles' broadcasting days. Charles Wheeler, the BBC's longest-serving foreign correspondent, was one of Britain's greatest news reporters. For more than four decades, he reported for radio and television from most of the world's trouble spots. Present at many of the key episodes of the twentieth century, he had - as a BBC manager noted after the shooting of George Wallace, Presidential candidate and Governor of Alabama, on 15 May 1972, 'a knack of being in the right place at the right time'. It was typical of Charles that he ran towards the sound of the gunshot while the crowd was running in the opposite direction.Wheeler's investigative skill and sense of judgement made him one of the most authoritative reporters of his generation. But what was it like to have been witness to the events that shaped our modern world? In this book - part memoir, part history, part reflection - his daughter, Shirin Wheeler, examines her father's journalistic legacy and brings her personal knowledge to bear on the project. She will tell the story of her father: a patient listener and forensic interrogator who was driven by curiosity and passion to report and expose injustice, and above all to give a voice to people ignored or unheard by many.

Between May 21 and June 16, 1791, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison went on a trip together through Upstate New York and parts of New England on horseback. Whether the country could overcome regional and political differences and remain unified, however, was still very much in question. Hence why some observers at the time wondered whether this excursion into Federalist New England by the two most prominent southern Democratic-Republicans, both future presidents, had an ulterior motive.

While in Vermont, they focused on the sugar maple tree, which many hoped might offer a domestic alternative to slave-grown sugar cane imports. An encounter with a free Black farmer at Fort George resulted in a journal entry that illuminates their attitudes toward slavery and race. A meeting with members of the Unkechaug tribe on Long Island led to a vocabulary project that preoccupied Jefferson for decades, and which remains relevant today.

Madison later recalled that the trip made Jefferson and him "immediate companions," solidifying a bond with almost no peer in the annals of American history, one that thrived for fifty years. Jefferson declared at the end of his life, that his friendship with Madison had been "a source of constant happiness" to him. This book reveals the moment when it took hold.
