Sinopse

ABOUT THE BOOK

If you'll allow me an immediate personal tangent, I feel obligated to tell you my favorite book of all time is 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I read it in high school and came away shocked at how deeply I connected with a genre as fantastical as magical realism. Reading The Shadow of the Wind conjured memories of my first experience with 100 Years of Solitude. Both stories span generations and have a dizzying amount of characters, most of whom never meet, but all of whom are mysteriously connected by a powerful force.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Luke stole an English degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has been a blogger for nearly a decade and a digital editor at an ad agency for three years. Luke enjoys playing sports, reading, listening to music, trying to play songs he likes on the guitar, quickly giving up on that and playing video games, and spending quality time with his wife.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

It's easy to imagine little Daniel, wide-eyed and silent, taking in the book-filled labyrinth of impossible geometry and nodding in response to his dad's question. His father lets him in on one of the Cemetery's traditions: first-time visitors choose a book. Once Daniel chooses, it will be his duty to make sure that as long as he's alive, his book is as well.He chooses The Shadow of the Wind by Julian Carax. He knows nothing about the book or its author, but that doesn't matter. The boy couldn't shake the feeling that it was waiting for him, and for more than 10 years.

In the coming pages, Daniel's life will be in danger because of The Shadow of the Wind, so it's paramount that we are fully on board with the notion that he'd put himself in harm's way to preserve words on a page.

Forensic science is in crisis and at a cross-roads. Movies and television dramas depict forensic heroes with high-tech tools and dazzling intellects who—inside an hour, notwithstanding commercials—piece together past-event puzzles from crime scenes and autopsies. Likewise, Sherlock Holmes—the iconic fictional detective, and the invention of forensic doctor Sir Arthur Conan Doyle—is held up as a paragon of forensic and scientific inspiration—does not "reason forward" as most people do, but "reasons backwards." Put more plainly, rather than learning the train of events and seeing whether the resultant clues match those events, Holmes determines what happened in the past by looking at the clues. Impressive and infallible as this technique appears to be—it must be recognized that infallibility lies only in works of fiction. Reasoning backward does not work in real life: reality is far less tidy.In courtrooms everywhere, innocent people pay the price of life imitating art, of science following detective fiction. In particular, this book looks at the long and disastrous shadow cast by that icon of deductive reasoning, Sherlock Holmes.

I went down yesterday to the Piraeus with Glaucon the son of Ariston, that I might offer up my prayers to the goddess (Bendis, the Thracian Artemis.); and also because I wanted to see in what manner they would celebrate the festival, which was a new thing. I was delighted with the procession of the inhabitants; but that of the Thracians was equally, if not more, beautiful. When we had finished our prayers and viewed the spectacle, we turned in the direction of the city; and at that instant Polemarchus the son of Cephalus chanced to catch sight of us from a distance as we were starting on our way home, and told his servant to run and bid us wait for him. The servant took hold of me by the cloak behind, and said: Polemarchus desires you to wait.I turned round, and asked him where his master was. There he is, said the youth, coming after you, if you will only wait.Certainly we will, said Glaucon; and in a few minutes Polemarchus appeared, and with him Adeimantus, Glaucon’s brother, Niceratus the son of Nicias, and several others who had been at the procession.Polemarchus said to me: I perceive, Socrates, that you and your companion are already on your way to the city. You are not far wrong, I said. But do you see, he rejoined, how many we are?Of course. And are you stronger than all these? for if not, you will have to remain where you are.May there not be the alternative, I said, that we may persuade you to let us go?But can you persuade us, if we refuse to listen to you? he said.Certainly not, replied Glaucon. Then we are not going to listen; of that you may be assured.Adeimantus added: Has no one told you of the torch-race on horseback in honour of the goddess which will take place in the evening? With horses! I replied: That is a novelty.

The complete collection of true crime stories and articles by the New York Times–bestselling author and former prosecutor. In this collection of horrifyingly true stories, Linda Fairstein provides an in-depth look inside the minds of such psychopaths as Ted Bundy and the Craigslist Killer. Drawing on decades of experience as a sex crimes prosecutor in New York City, she delves into the atrocities of these cold-blooded criminals and explains how they target their unsuspecting victims. A true victim advocate, she deftly touches on taboo subjects like law enforcement’s astounding failure to process rape kits, as well as the false rape claims that ruin innocent people’s lives.   With her background in the Special Victims Bureau, Fairstein offers an unfiltered view of rape in the United States. But she doesn’t stop there: She uses her understanding of the inner workings of violent criminals’ minds to outline ways for women to protect themselves.   Originally published in Cosmopolitan magazine and collected here for the first time, each essay features a new introduction by the author.
