Summary

Pirandello's classic play updated for the twenty-first century.
Blurring the border between fiction and life, between the stage and the world outside, Six Characters in Search of an Author exploded onto the stage in 1921 as one of the unique achievements of twentieth-century drama.
Updated and recontextualised in this vertiginous new version, it becomes a dark parable for a media-obsessed age and an exhilarating exploration of how we define art, ourselves and 'reality' in the twenty-first century.
'exhilarating... stunning' - The Times
'madly ingenious... gives a remarkable new lease of life to Pirandello's seminal play' - Independent
'brilliantly inventive... gets to the heart of Pirandello's meaning while making the old play seem fresh to a modern audience' - Daily Telegraph

Inspired by a group of herons resting near the author's home towards the end of a long and difficult winter, this collection of poems employs the crane — the symbol of longevity, immortality, and good fortune in Asian folklore — as its dominant image. Questions such as How do we make sense of our lives? and What is the role of the imagination, art, and place in shaping our vision of the self and teaching us how to be human? are explored using unabashed lyricism and a wry, philosophical style. Winter Cranes demonstrates Chris Banks' ability to be an uncompromising poet, determined to understand his experience of a world constantly changing around him.

A collection, The Culprit Fay and Other Poems, was published posthumously by his daughter in 1835. His best-known poems are the long title-poem of that collection and the patriotic "The American Flag" which was set as a cantata for two soloists, choir and orchestra by the Czech composer Antonin Dvorák in 1892-93, as his Op. 102. In the early part of the 19th Century both Drake and his friend Halleck were widely hailed by Americans as among the leading literary personalities and talents produced by this country. That they had been leading lights in the New York area was true, but the glimmer for both could not really hold. It was finally diminished by Edgar Allan Poe when he wrote a serious study of the two poets called The Halleck - Rodman Review. Looking at The Culprit Fay by Drake, Poe showed that the imagery many marveled at was quite second-rate and ordinary. In fact, he briefly invented new lines to show how easily it could be done. The reputations of both Drake and Halleck never recovered. (Summary excerpted from Wikipedia)

Kate Mulgrew as Katharine Hepburn in Tea at Five has won standing ovations at each performance.
The independent, intelligent, feisty Hepburn comes alive when Mulgrew slips deftly into the voice and being of the famous actress. The two-act play opens in 1938 when the actress is 31 years old and in the middle of a career slump. She is awaiting a call to see if she has won the part of Scarlet in a film called Gone With the Wind. The story moved to 1983 when Parkinson's disease has left her voice shaking, her hand clutching a cane, but her eyes still shining with intelligence and wit. Tea at Five is an unforgettable trip down Broadway, Hollywood Blvd, and memory lane.
