Sinopse

How can the West rediscover its authentic spirit? Exploring the period from 1899 to 1945 – from the end of the US frontier and the writing of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to the conclusion of World War II and the dropping of the atom bomb – Luigi Morelli traces the events that led the United States to become the world's dominating imperial force. America, he demonstrates, is deeply connected to Britain, Germany and Eastern Europe, particularly Russia. Yet despite their tragic collective histories, there is hope for the future – if only America can claim its true task.
Searching for the Spirit of the West challenges many of the falsehoods that pass for mainstream history. Utilizing a wealth of documented evidence from the research of overlooked historians, economists, social and spiritual thinkers, the author takes a symptomatic view of the past, revealing hidden, longer-term trends. This approach offers a new understanding of events such as the rise of Nazism, the Great Depression, the new Deal, and even the roles of banking and clandestine 'brotherhoods' in world history. Morelli also appraises The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in parallel with America's cultural achievements. Through imagination, L. Frank Baum's contemporary fairy-tale enables us to intuit the true mission of the West and its potential contribution to world culture, now and in the future.

The founding of Rome is one of the most famous legends in history, blending myth and reality to shape the origins of one of the greatest civilizations of the ancient world. According to Roman tradition, the city was established in 753 BCE by Romulus, the first king of Rome, after he and his twin brother, Remus, were rescued and raised by a she-wolf. This tale, passed down through generations, symbolized Rome’s strength, resilience, and divine favor. While the legend is deeply ingrained in Roman identity, historians believe the city’s origins were more complex, involving the gradual unification of Latin and Etruscan tribes.
The early formation of Rome was influenced by its strategic location along the Tiber River. The site provided access to trade routes, fresh water, and natural defenses, making it an ideal settlement for early inhabitants. Archaeological evidence suggests that small villages existed in the area long before Rome’s legendary founding, with early settlers engaging in agriculture, trade, and warfare. These early communities gradually coalesced, forming a unified society under a monarchical system. The first rulers of Rome were part of the Roman Kingdom, a period that saw the development of political institutions, religious practices, and military organization that would shape the city’s future.
Roman society during its early years was structured around family and clan-based systems, with the patricians, or aristocratic families, holding the majority of political power. The king was the central authority, responsible for religious duties, military leadership, and lawmaking. However, his rule was supported by a council of elders known as the Senate, which played an advisory role. Over time, tensions arose between the patricians and the common people, or plebeians, who sought greater political representation. These early power struggles foreshadowed the later conflicts that would lead to the transition from monarchy to a republic.

There is a crisis facing America’s men. They have fallen behind women in school, they are often overlooked in career opportunities, and they are scolded for their unique educational needs. No solutions have been found because our reigning civil rights regime prevents us from even acknowledging the problem or from coming to grips with it. Instead, our laws keep insisting on “gender neutral” remedies like improving test scores or graduation rates—ignoring the natural differences between the sexes. The assault on single-sex institutions—from military schools to the boy scouts—accelerated with the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Virginia (1996). In Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg majority opinion, she argued that natural differences between men and women were artifacts of prejudice and could not be used to justify single-sex education. She predicted that Virginia Military Institute (VMI) would not have to change much to admit women. Over twenty years later, evidence to the contrary is compounding. With new physical standards, alternative forms of discipline, new dress codes and grooming standards, and a new honor code which disregards the courage and sacrifice of men, one could only image what else could be changed. To seriously consider the unique educational needs for men, we must be free to consider the unique natural differences between men and women. Therefore, the states should seek to overturn United States v. Virginia (1996) and be allowed to consider the unique needs of men once again in education and allow manly honor as a legitimate goal for public schools.

Inviting new translations of classical Buddhist texts about why the self is an illusion—and why giving it up can free us from suffering

From self-realization and self-promotion to self-help and the selfie, the modern world encourages us to be self-obsessed. We are even told that finding ourselves is the key to happiness. Better to lose yourself! More than 2,500 years ago, the Buddha argued that the self is an illusion—and that our belief in it is the cause of most, if not all, of our suffering. How to Lose Yourself presents lively, accessible, and expert new translations of ancient Buddhist writings about the central, unique, and powerful Buddhist teaching of "no-self."

Drawn from three important Buddhist traditions, these essential Indian, Tibetan, and Chinese writings provide a rich sampling of the ways Buddhist philosophers have understood the idea that we are selfless persons—and why this insight is so therapeutic. When we let go of the self, we are awakened to the presence of all things as they truly are, and we let go of the anxiety, fear, greed, and hatred that are the source of all suffering.

One of the most satisfying experiences is to successfully finish what you start. Of course, this is not a one-time event, but something that should happen again and again. The more often this happens, the more satisfying it becomes.
