Zimmerman's eyes is to be reminded of the many ways in which love, religion, family, sex, money—or often lack thereof—lay bare our most elemental and embarrassing humanness. From meditations on heartbreak to not-so-helpful how-tos, this laugh-and-cry-out-loud essay collection documents one person's navigation through queerness, climbing the corporate ladder, dating cryptocurrency-obsessed mansplainers, mourning the loss of religiosity, and all the minute, beautiful discoveries in between.

“From the seminal Last House on the Left to Scream 2 . . . Robb’s concoction is entertaining and informative about a recognized cinematic auteur.” —Booklist   Writer, producer, and director Wes Craven has successfully tapped into the horror vein for over forty years, serving up scary, funny, cutting-edge thrillers that have become classics in the genre. His films have been both critical and commercial successes, most notably Nightmare on Elm Street, which spawned a series of sequels and made Craven (and his creation, Freddy Kruger) an international sensation. He then created a second indelible series in the horror movie trope with Scream. In Screams & Nightmares, Brian J. Robb examines Craven’s entire career, from his low-budget beginnings to his most recent box office hits, from the banned thriller The Last House on the Left and the cult classic The Hills Have Eyes to the outrageous Shocker and The People Under the Stairs. Through exclusive interviews with Craven, Robb provides in-depth accounts of the making of each of the films—including the final installments of the Scream series—Craven’s foray into writing novels, and his numerous television projects.  “Dripping with fascinating details . . . this is a treat.” —The Washington Post  “A remarkably addictive and easy-to-read guide to Craven’s work, piling in juicy snippets and lesser-known background . . . a comprehensive picture of Craven and his output.” —Sci-Fi Bulletin  “Definitive . . . info-packed and exceptionally well written . . . there is no writer better qualified to chronicle the life and work of a remarkable talent.” —The Dark Side

"Anthems We Love is not just a tale of artistic adventure, it's also a manual for artists and fans alike. There is no formula. Just these inspiring stories of the heart . . . " —Cameron Crowe, Academy Award–nominated director, producer, and screenwriter (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Say Anything, and Pearl Jam Twenty)
From U2 to Carly Simon, the Temptations to TLC, artists describe in their own words how their songs became the soundtrack of your life in this celebration of music featuring original interviews by acclaimed music journalist Steve Baltin.
Which Beach Boys’ song brings Paul McCartney to tears? What makes “Light My Fire” a rite-of-passage song for teens in every generation, according to Doors guitarist Robby Krieger? What is it about music that brings back so vividly the passion of our early loves, our deepest losses, our richest memories?
Acclaimed music journalist Steve Baltin examines twenty-nine iconic songs of modern music to ultimately answer: what transforms a song into an anthem? How did these songs become such a part of our culture? Featuring original interviews with superstar musicians like the Beach Boys, Shania Twain, and Earth Wind and Fire, this book offers a detailed celebration of songwriting, fan connections, memorable live performances, and more.
A must-have anthology for music fans, Anthems We Love showcases the most beloved and popular songs of all time, including Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” the Jackson 5’s “ABC,” Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way,” and TOTO’s “Africa.” More so, it centers the artists behind these songs—and the songs that formed the soundtracks of their lives—as they share stories, for the first time, about how writing an anthem has changed their lives, those of their fans, and our world.

Mali Empire - Gold Mansa Musa...

The Mali Empire emerged in the early 13th century, rising from the remnants of the Ghana Empire and the consolidation of the Malinke people under a visionary leader, Sundiata Keita. The region that would become Mali was already a center of commerce, culture, and political organization, benefiting from its strategic position along the trans-Saharan trade routes. However, it was the collapse of Ghana and the subsequent struggle for power that allowed Mali to emerge as a dominant force in West Africa.
The Ghana Empire, which had once controlled vast gold reserves and major trade routes, began to decline due to internal conflicts, overexpansion, and pressure from external forces such as the Almoravid invasions. As Ghana weakened, many of its vassal states and ethnic groups, including the Malinke people, sought independence and new opportunities for leadership. The Malinke, a subgroup of the Mande-speaking people, inhabited the area along the upper Niger River and had long engaged in trade and farming. Their political organization had been fragmented, but under Sundiata Keita, they would come together to form a unified and powerful state.
Sundiata Keita’s rise to power is deeply rooted in legend and oral tradition, preserved in the Epic of Sundiata. According to the narrative, Sundiata was born into the Keita royal family but faced exile due to political rivalries. During this time, the Sosso Kingdom, under the rule of Sumanguru Kanté, expanded its influence and sought to dominate the Malinke. Sundiata, gathering allies among different clans and neighboring groups, returned from exile to lead a coalition against Sumanguru at the Battle of Kirina around 1235. His victory in this decisive conflict not only ended Sosso rule but also laid the foundation for the Mali Empire.
