Summary

Christmas is a popular time in Estonia. The Estonian Christmas has many familiar traditions from western and northern European festive celebrations. Estonia’s Nordic, wintry climate also helps to create a Christmas atmosphere. Estonian cultural, rural and pagan traditions have also influenced the Estonian Christmas and create some unique Christmas customs.

Food is naturally a big part of Christmas. Estonia’s traditional foods include rye bread, pork, cabbage, potatoes and dairy products and these play a big part in Estonia’s Christmas meals. Estonians enjoy fresh seasonal ingredients and these help create a variety of Christmas dishes. Of course, a wide range of indulgent festive foods such as cookies, cakes and chocolate dishes are also enjoyed.

For years, cardiologist Arthur Agaston, M.D. urged his patients to lose weight for the sake of their hearts, but every diet was too hard to follow or its restrictions were too harsh. You'll also eat eggs, cheese, nuts, and vegetables. Snacks are required. You'll learn to avoid the bad carbs, like white flour, white sugar, and baked potatoes. Dr. Agaston's diet has produced consistently dramatic results (8 to 13 pounds lost in the first 2 weeks!) and has become a media sensation in South Florida. Now you, too, can join the ranks of the fit and fabulous with The South Beach Diet.

In The Taste of Empire, acclaimed historian Lizzie Collingham tells the story of how the British Empire's quest for food shaped the modern world. Told through twenty meals over the course of 450 years, from the Far East to the New World, Collingham explains how Africans taught Americans how to grow rice, how the East India Company turned opium into tea, and how Americans became the best-fed people in the world.
In The Taste of Empire, Collingham masterfully shows that only by examining the history of Great Britain's global food system, from sixteenth-century Newfoundland fisheries to our present-day eating habits, can we fully understand our capitalist economy and its role in making our modern diets.

This nineteenth-century cooking manual is the first Jewish cookbook published in America, and only the second written in the English language.

Originally published in 1871, Esther Levy’s Jewish Cookery Book was written to help new immigrants adapt to life in the New World while maintaining their religious heritage; and it even includes a Jewish calendar as well as recipes for home doctoring. Levy’s cookbook follows Jewish law regarding cooking for the Sabbath, Passover, and other Jewish holidays; and it provides great detail about how to organize the household, and what steps to follow in conducting Jewish activities. The medicinal recipe section provides recipes for various ailments as well as cautions for visiting the sick. The book offers practical, down-to-earth advice for American-born Jews who did not have the benefit of a traditional Jewish education.

This facsimile edition of Esther Levy's Jewish Cookery Book was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts, founded in 1812.
