Summary

PARTNERS FOR POSSIBILITY is the compelling story of what can happen when you think in terms of possibility instead of deficiency. It’s the story of what happens when people say yes.

This is the story of Partners for Possibility, an organisation that has brokered trailblazing partnerships between business leaders and school principals – partnerships that continue to reap astonishing results in the schools they are working in. It’s the story of an organisation dedicated to changing South Africa’s ailing education system, one school at a time.

Partners for Possibility is like no other educational intervention in South Africa because it is simultaneously a movement of active citizenship, a nation-building process, a leadership programme, a corporate social investment and a system that has the power to change the very fabric of South African society.

This book is a beautiful collection and celebration of many different voices which share one common experience – Partners for Possibility. It is precisely this commonality that provides the inspiration, the power and the authenticity behind the stories. This book will help all of us to rediscover our courage to feel differently and act meaningfully as we impact our own spheres of influence, while at the same time deepening our respect for a leadership movement,PfP, that is so desperately needed in these troublesome and bewildering times.
? Dr John D Volmink, Chair, Umalusi Council

The story of Partners for Possibility is the original Thuma Mina Story. It’s a story about someone saying, ‘something needs to be fixed, let me do what I can to fix it’. It’s a story of collaboration and leadership development for change anchored in the power of dreams, hope and tenacity. It’s also a story about believing in people and restoring their self-belief and resilience. I’ve been fortunate to encounter some of the leaders who have been shaped by the programme and was inspired by their transformation. Along with others, some of their uplifting stories are featured in this book. A lot of mistakes being made in our institutions are the result of leadership, governance and capacity related challenges. PfP addresses these while contributing to resilient communities. I honour Louise van Rhyn for choosing to light a candle against darkness and call on all who have the resources and skills to join the programme. Through your contributions we’ll bring our beautiful country closer to the constitutional commitment, our National Development Plan objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals.

People will barely admit it when they make their decisions mainly because they are influenced by others. Many don’t even realize it when that is the fact, but years, thousands of years, people have been doing the same thing to get people to do and react the way they want them to. It is the art of persuasion that begins early age as we beg our parents to buy that toy we want so badly. It continues up to when we grow up and persuade our customers to purchase a product he might never need. Why is persuasion so powerful and why do people fall for it?

Are we truly embracing diversity, or are we merely widening the divides? Amidst the abundance of well-intentioned DEI initiatives, many fall short, often lacking focus, concrete goals, and a deep understanding of the root causes of inequality - sometimes even causing unintended harm.
"The Other 364 Days - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: The Glass Half Full" asserts that the celebration of DEI cannot be confined to designated days, like International Women’s Day on March 8, Pride Day on June 24, or International Men’s Day on November 19. What about the rest of the year? This book will get you the answers.
It advocates for DEI to be a fundamental, continuous thread that permeates every business decision, every single day. It calls for action on those other 364 days, seeing DEI as a powerful catalyst for raising awareness, mobilizing allies, and integrating psychologically safe working practices into the norm.
Designed for leaders eager to traverse beyond superficial, performative DEI and bring about long-term, systemic change, this book also resonates with those who feel out of place in the world they were born into. It stands as a beacon of hope, paving the way towards a kinder, more inclusive world.
Using the metaphor that Diversity is being invited to the party and Inclusion is being asked to dance, this book asks a crucial question: How can we ensure we're not "too late to the party"? This book doesn't just offer an invitation - it shows you how to arrive in style, and just in time.
