Sinopsis

In "A Modern Cinderella; Or, The Little Old Shoe, and Other Stories," Louisa May Alcott weaves a collection of enchanting tales that merge whimsical fantasy with subtle moral lessons. Employing a rich narrative style reminiscent of both fairy tales and the emerging realism of the 19th century, Alcott invites readers into a world where social expectations are challenged, and virtues like kindness and resilience are rewarded. The juxtaposition of traditional Cinderella motifs with modern sensibilities not only reflects the evolving roles of women during her time but also critiques societal norms, making this work a compelling study of gender and class dynamics in the post-Civil War era. Louisa May Alcott, renowned for her seminal work "Little Women," was deeply influenced by her own experiences growing up in a progressive household, where her father's transcendentalist philosophy and her mother's abolitionist activism shaped her worldview. These formative years instilled in Alcott a profound understanding of the challenges faced by women, propelling her to create stories that inspire empowerment. Her belief in the importance of moral character and individual agency resonates throughout this collection, marking her as a pioneer in women's literature. This collection is highly recommended for those seeking a blend of enchantment and social commentary, as it captures the essence of Alcott's visionary thinking. Readers of all ages will be charmed by the relatable characters and uplifting narratives that challenge the status quo, making it a timeless addition to any literary repertoire.

The Prince and the Pauper is a novel by American author Mark Twain. It was first published in 1881 in Canada, before its 1882 publication in the United States. The novel represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, it tells the story of two young boys who were born on the same day and are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive, alcoholic father in Offal Court off Pudding Lane in London, and Edward VI of England, son of Henry VIII of England.

The Russian novel has a reputation that is immense, both in narrative and in length. Unquestionably though the ideas, themes and characters make many novels rightly revered as world class, as icons of literature.

Perhaps an easier way to enjoy a wider selection of the Russian heritage, with its varied and glorious literary talents, is with the short story. These gems sparkle and beguile the mind with their characters and narrative, exploring facets of society and the human condition that more Western authors somehow find more difficult to navigate, or to explore, explain and relate to.

The Russian short story is, in many respects, in a genre of its own. It is at its captivating best whether it’s an exploration of real-life experiences, through fantasy and fables and on to total absurdity.

In a land so vast it is unsurprising that it is a world almost unto itself. Cultures and landscapes of differing hues are packed together bound only by the wilful bonds and force of Empire.

The stories in this collection traverse the decades where one might be a serf under an absolute monarch, and the reality of that was pretty near to slavery, into an emancipation of sorts in the fields, or towns under the despotic will of landowners and the rich into the upheavals of Empire and then the overthrow of the ruling class and its replacement by the communists, who promised equality for all and delivered a society where the down-trodden remained the lowest yet vital cog of the state machine and its will.

Whilst Tolstoy, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Pushkin and Chekhov are a given in any Russian collection we also explore and include Andreyev, Korolenko, Turgenev, Blavatsky and many others to create a world rich and dense across a sprawling landscape of diverse people, riddled with the class and unfairness in perhaps some of the most turbulent times that Russia has ever experienced.

"To know the truth of our story."

Everything in life has a price. Nothing is ever freely gifted. The universe always comes, whether in the brightest, cheek-aching second of the day or the darkest, most plaintive hour of the night, to collect its payment. To rattle and shake your world. To slither into the illusion of Eden painted by strokes of lies and deceit.

And I had left the door open for it, welcoming the thief into my house to steal what was dearest to me.

Even if I had done every unthinkable, irrational, detestable thing to prevent it.

To fight the inevitable loss of the base mistake I had made. The princess that was never supposed to be mine. The deception that had slowly bled darkness into my soul. Eating away at the back of my mind in a cackling mockery. Throttling my throat with the words I had chosen not to speak. Because the love I had found, the one I had never expected, never foreseen, was a tale I had woven full of lies to keep.

There was always a price. For everyone, in everything. Innocent and guilty alike. And now I'd learned mine. But what would theirs be?
