Sinopse

Bartleby the Scrivener meets Catch-22 in this charmingly sardonic tale of love, war and fertilizer.

WINNER OF THE PRIX DES COLLAGIENS

Simon turned his thoughts to her daily. There were few enough of them, but each one lingered. He imagined their life together. Sometimes even their children’s lives. Sometimes he set his fantasies in Spain, sometimes America, less often Peru– so many settings, all of which turned into the bedroom, eventually.

It's 1862, and Spain is a little rueful about letting Peru have their independence. Or, more importantly, letting Peru have the guano – 'white gold' – on the Chincha Islands. Simon is the ship's recorder on a scientific – okay, military – expedition when he meets, in Callao, the mysterious Montse. She asks of him only that he write her letters. Which he utterly fails to do. As military tensions escalate, so does Simon's unabated lust for Montse – even if he can't bring himself to do anything about it.

"A novel that makes you want to read long passages out loud – or at least memorize snippets, just for the music of the words of Québec writer Louis Carmain." — La Presse (translated from the French)

Tyrol, 1809: an innkeeper leads the mountain peasants against Napoleon and Bavaria, beats a regular army three times at Bergisel, is abandoned by his own Emperor, and is shot at Mantua by French order. Mühlbach was Klara Mundt, who wrote nearly three hundred volumes; Hofer was a real man within living memory when she wrote, and the betrayal by Vienna is not softened. Fifty-one plates by painters including Munch and Friedrich trace the mountain landscape and the restless inner life of the Tyrol, matching Hofer's world of peaks, mist and sleepless nights.

It’s 1923 and at Thistlecrook House, a forbidding home on the Scottish border, the roaring twenties seem not to have arrived. But Simon Christie has – a young man who can’t believe his luck when he gets a job cataloguing the infamous art collection of the Mordrake family. Yet from the moment he gets off the train at the deserted village station he can’t shift a headache and a sense that there’s more to the House and its gruesome selection of pictures.
Simon’s host is glad of his company, but he gets the feeling the house is not so welcoming. As his questions about the Mordrakes grow, he finds answers in surprising places. But someone is not pleased that old secrets are stirring.
As night falls each evening, and a growing sense of unease roils in the shifting shadows around him, Simon must decide what he can trust and ask if he can believe what he sees in the dusk or if his mind is poisoned by what has happened before in this place between lands, between light and dark.
