  The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Volume 2:
  Throughout many years, Dr. John H. Watson accompanied his friend and companion Sherlock Holmes in solving countless mysteries and crimes. Beginning in the 1880s and into the 20th century, Holmes consistently held his status as the world’s most brilliant and successful detective. His accomplishments were painstakingly chronicled by Watson in notes that relate the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Many of his accounts have been published and are well-known to a broad readership.
  There were times, however, when Watson would refrain from publishing his writings during his lifetime. He would do so for various reasons: At times, he would find himself forced to keep actual events and background information secret for moral, criminal, or financial reasons. Other times, he would want to either avoid potential political, legal, or social scandals or even damage to his own—or Holmes’s—reputation. Some of Watson’s accounts, however, were simply not published at the time because he was occupied with more important or urgent matters.
  The New Adventures brings to the public for the very first time some of Watson’s accounts of Sherlock Holmes cases previously kept under lock and key.

  "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box" is one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is the second of the twelve Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes in most British editions of the canon, and the second of the eight stories from His Last Bow in most American versions. The story was first published in The Strand Magazine in 1893.
  Miss Susan Cushing of Croydon receives a parcel in the post that contains two severed human ears packed in coarse salt. Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard suspects a prank by three medical students whom Miss Cushing was forced to evict because of their unruly behaviour. The parcel was sent from Belfast, the city of origin of one of the former boarders. Upon examining the parcel himself, Holmes is convinced that it is evidence of a serious crime. He reasons that a medical student with access to a dissection laboratory would likely use something other than plain salt to preserve human remains, and would be able to make a more precise cut than the roughly hacked ears suggest. The address on the package, roughly written and with a spelling correction, suggests to Holmes that the sender lacks education and is unfamiliar with Croydon. The knot in the string suggests to Holmes that they are looking for someone with sailing experience.

  Sherlock Holmes and his partner Dr. Watson travel by train to Dartmoor to investigate a crime of disappearance of the great race horse Silver Blaze and the murder of the horse's trainer, John Straker. Holmes and Watson arrive at King's Pyland, from which Silver Blaze is missing. Fitzroy Simpson has come to Dartmoor (and specifically to King's Pyland) to gather information relating to his professional activities, and has become a suspect in the murder. However, to Holmes, from the outset, there seem to be a number of facts that do not fit the inspector's case against Simpson, damning as it looks. It seems odd, for instance, that he would lead the horse out on to the moor simply to injure or kill him. That could be done right in his stall. He could not have stolen the animal. What good would such a famous thoroughbred be to him? Why has an exhaustive search of the neighbourhood not turned up Silver Blaze? What has Simpson done with him?
