Heartscapes explores ‘the greater love’ we see in people and the world around us. The ‘heart’ poems are the prayers of a contemplative set in the context of a long life that has known tragedy and suffering as well as love and many friendships.
Heartscapes also includes salty wisdom about real life, love poems, stories, eco-poems, poems inspired by animals, translations, poems in memory of loved ones – and much more. It thus resonates with all the living, human and animate that I encounter, as well as the landscape and seascape we are blessed with in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Hand in hand with indigenous peoples, Maori, Aboriginal, Pacific, I’m trying to recover a sense of the sacred we have lost in our western science- and info-based culture.

1943, Henley-on-Thames. Miss Roach is forced by the war to flee London for the Rosamund Tea Rooms boarding house, a place as grey and lonely as its residents. From the safety of these new quarters, her war effort now consists of a thousand petty humiliations, of which the most burdensome is sharing her daily life with the unbearable Mr Thwaites.
But a breath of fresh air arrives in the form of a handsome American lieutenant and things start to look distinctly brighter. Until a new boarder moves into the room next to Miss Roach's – outwardly friendly, she soon starts upsetting the precarious balance in the house.
Nicholas Wright's play The Slaves of Solitude weaves a fascinating blend of dark hilarity and melancholy from Patrick Hamilton's much-loved story about an improbable heroine in wartime Britain. The play premiered at Hampstead Theatre, London, in October 2017.
'Brilliantly transformed for the stage by Nicholas Wright… although there is some wonderful sly comedy from the start, [the play's] strength is in a humane, rueful, oddly hopeful understanding of loneliness and of the way we try to make real connections… no character is all bad, nor all good; even the most minor of them, in fleetingly sketched moments, reveal both their handicap and their hope. It's lovely' - TheatreCat
'[A] witty, evocative, gnarly human drama… the home front is a hotbed here as people who look like heroes or villains reveal themselves to be more complex while they make their small but crucial claims for territory… wonderful' - The Times
'Nicholas Wright's adaptation captures the familiar emotional notes of Hamilton's fiction, the pervading loneliness, the melancholy, the use of booze as a crutch and a shield' - The Stage

Comprised of four heroic crowns of sonnets, Alicia Mountain’s Four in Hand is both formal and experimental, ranging from lyric romantic and familial narratives to blank verses of reconfigured found text pulled from financial newsletter emails. Language and white space equally captivate with their sparsity and abundance as Mountain pursues the implications of national political identity with intersectional awareness. These poems interrogate our collective complicity in late-stage capitalism, drone warfare, the election of Donald Trump, environmental degradation, mental health crises, and the dawn of Covid-19 through the lens of gay poetic lineage, regionalism, and familial kinships structures. With one enthralling image after the other, Four in Hand builds a world that carves out necessary space for lesbian gaze, speakership, and personhood. From the back corner of a vast, sprawling, yet gorgeous landscape of thought, Mountain's poems beckon us inside.

Ibsen's classic tragic masterpiece, in a new version by Richard Eyre.
Helene Alving has spent her life suspended in an emotional void after the death of her cruel but outwardly charming husband. She is determined to escape the ghosts of her past by telling her son, Oswald, the truth about his father.
But on his return from his life as a painter in France, Oswald reveals how he has already inherited the legacy of Alving's dissolute life.
Richard Eyre's scintillating new version of perhaps Ibsen's greatest play premiered at the Almeida Theatre, London in October 2013.
'raw and unsparing, but also devastatingly true to the spirit of the original... theatre seldom, if ever, comes greater than this' Sunday Telegraph
'both humorous and deeply affecting... the most lucid and affecting version of the play I have ever seen' Time Out
