Summary

Organize a modern quilting bee with these 13 projects that spark creativity, build skills, and connect you with others.Modern Bee―13 Quilts to Make with Friends by Lindsay Conner features 13 projects for a virtual one-year quilting bee. Crafted with a modern aesthetic, the patterns are inspired by traditional quilt blocks as well as bits and pieces of daily life. As you quilt along with this book from month to month, you'll master sewing techniques elevating in difficulty―from easy to advanced. Each project is comprised of block instructions and a pattern to finish a full-size quilt. You'll also find a comprehensive section on quilting basics and plenty of tips on organizing your own virtual bee.“A modern bee: quilters connect only by Internet and snail mail, each month a “host” chooses a block, others work that block to return to the “host” for assembly.... Conner, a writer/editor/quilter/blogger, produces a well-crafted guidebook based on her online bee, the Mod Stitches. Members designed a baker’s dozen patterns—one for each month, plus one for gift-giving or charity fundraising—that would work well for the modern bee as well as for individual quilters.”—Publishers Weekly

“If you have an appetite for culinary adventure, you’ll devour the feisty and fun memoir” (Elle magazine) by James Beard award-winning chef, restaurateur, and Top Chef judge Barbara Lynch as she recounts her rise from her rough “Southie” childhood to culinary stardom.Celebrated chef Barbara Lynch—named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2017—credits the defiant spirit of her upbringing in tough, poor “Southie,” a neighborhood ruled by the notorious Whitey Bulger gang, with helping her bluff her way into her first professional cooking jobs; develop a distinct culinary style through instinct and sheer moxie; then dare to found an empire of restaurants ranging from a casual but elegant “clam shack” to Boston’s epitome of modern haute cuisine. As award-winning chef Ana Sortun raves, “Her heroic story inspires us to remain true to who we are and honor our dreams with conviction.” One of seven children born to an overworked single mother, Lynch was raised in a housing project. She earned a daredevil reputation for boosting vehicles (even a city bus), petty theft, drinking and doing drugs, and narrowly escaping arrest—haunted all the while by a painful buried trauma.Out of Line describes Lynch’s remarkable process of self-invention, including her encounters with colorful characters of the food world, and vividly evokes the magic of creation in the kitchen. It is also a love letter to South Boston and its vanishing culture, governed by Irish Catholic mothers and its own code of honor. “Foodies will enjoy the vivid language used to describe Lynch’s food exploits, and old neighbors will be treated to a trip around south Boston through the eyes of a local” (Library Journal). Through her story, Lynch explores how the past—both what we strive to escape from and what we remain true to—can strengthen and expand who we are.

Grab your drink of choice and uncover the one thing we all have in common: a lifetime of beverages, from the ancient world to the modern era.Hot drinks, cold drinks, and everything in-between—this is the history of beverages through the ages. This book aims to describe the development of beverages and drinking habits, as well as their connection with other facets of life. This information will be of universal interest, no matter the listener's occupation or background. What Will You Drink? is a rather uncommon history book, as books on history generally tend to disregard the topic of food and drink. Rather than emphasizing the technical aspects of creating food, this book explores the cultural and historical significance of all the delicious and diverse refreshments we have to choose from in our modern world. From comforting brews like coffee and tea to luxurious staples like beer and wine, this book strives to uncover the many—and sometimes hidden—ways in which beverages relate to social behavior, business activity, and politics. In June 2016 I decided to sell my house of 22 years and leave my comfort zone. Slowly the Camino de Santiago showed itself and I decided, with no rucksack or hiking experience to start... But that’s another story, the one that led to this one.My Camino in Spain taught me to let go of everything I didn’t need, to travel light and wash my clothes in the shower, but most importantly it taught me to trust my heart and my feet, to let my journey unfold naturally, instinctively, intuitively. In the words of the theme song from my favourite TV show, “Nobody knows where they might end up” when they follow their heart.Riding high on reaching the true destination of my Camino I raced to the airport to leave a country I had fallen in love with but which I’d had enough of (for the moment). There were two flights out that night; Seattle or Vancouver. Which country would I end up in next? My heart was calling me to Seattle, the Emerald City, the home of my TV family, but it all depended on my cab driver and how fast I could run with a loaded rucksack.
