Sinopse

Rome, 23 BC.  Beneath the imposing shadow of the Forum of Augustus, a chilling census is underway.  Tiberius Claudius Nero, a meticulous census taker, finds a terrifying pattern emerging from his scrolls: citizens mysteriously perish soon after their names are recorded. They die not by violence, but by whispers – inaudible to most, yet deadly enough to steal the very breath from their lungs. When a prominent senator collapses mid-oration, Claudius’s ordered world begins to unravel. He confides in Marcus Junius Brutus, a shrewd lawyer, and Livia Drusilla, a sharp-witted scribe, whose keen eye uncovers manipulated records hinting at a far more earthly conspiracy.  Their investigation plunges them into the shadowy alleys of the Subura, where whispers of a forgotten god, Viduus, intertwine with the ambitions of the ruthlessly powerful Senator Lucius Calpurnius Piso.Piso, veiled in piety, exploits the whispers and the growing fear, orchestrating a calculated scheme to seize control of Rome.  As the whispers intensify, Livia uncovers a dangerous ritual linked to her own ancestry – a ritual that could sever the curse, but at a terrible price.  Brutus, caught in a web of political deceit, must choose between his ambition and the safety of the city.  And Claudius, his belief in logic shattered, must confront the terrifying reality of a world far more chaotic than his meticulous records suggest. With the grand Ludi Romani festival fast approaching, Piso prepares to unleash the amplified curse upon the unsuspecting masses.  The fate of Rome hangs in the balance.  Can Claudius, Brutus, and Livia expose Piso’s conspiracy and silence the whispers before they consume the city, or will they become the curse’s next victims?

““What is a ‘Bummel’?” said George. “How would you translate it?”
“A ‘Bummel’,” I explained, “I should describe as a journey, long or short, without an end; the only thing regulating it being the necessity of getting back within a given time to the point from which one started.””
Written in 1900, Jerome. K. Jerome’s sequel to his successful “Three Men in a Boat” (1889) retains his same three men; Harris, George, and himself. They are now older, if not always wiser, and decide to embark on a bicycle tour of the Black Forest and its surrounding areas.
Perhaps it is something of the late Victorian Gentleman’s attitude to “foreign parts” that give this sequel a somewhat less frivolous tone than the generally jolly one of three men boating on the familiar Thames. Indeed, the description of the popular practise of German Student duelling (“The Mensur”) is decidedly graphic. Yet despite a less cohesive narrative there are still many equally funny incidents, told with Jerome’s characteristic self-deprecating style. Not least, dear Uncle Podger makes a welcome return as he tries his futile best to leave the house on time for work.

The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone is one of 12 Sherlock Holmes short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle in The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in the Strand Magazine in October 1921.Watson arrives in 221B Baker Street where the page boy Billy shows him a wax effigy of Holmes placed near a curtained window in the sitting room. The effigy produces a shadow on the curtain that, when viewed from outside, is the unmistakable profile of Sherlock Holmes. Using this visual trick, Holmes aims to give a perfect target to a would-be murderer with a rifle. Holmes names his murderer as Count Negretto Sylvius, the diamond thief he has been following in disguise. He gives the criminal's address to Watson, then sends the doctor out the back for the police. As the Count arrives, Holmes has Billy invite him inside, then takes him by surprise when he attempts an assault on the effigy. Holmes then offers the Count and his helper, boxer Sam Merton, freedom if they give up the jewel, or jail if not.He invites them to discuss the deal while he plays violin in the next room. When the Count decides to double-cross Holmes and takes the stone from his secret pocket to show Sam in window light, the detective springs from the chair in place of his replica and grabs the £100K jewel. His bedroom has a gramophone and secret passage to behind the curtain. After the police take away the villains, Lord Cantlemere sweeps in. Unlike the Prime Minister and Home Secretary, he did not want Holmes. When tricked into insisting on arrest for whoever is found possessing the diamond, he finds the jewel in his pocket – where Holmes has placed it – and apologizes. Finally, Holmes can eat.Famous works of the author Arthur Conan Doyle: A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, Stories of Sherlock Holmes, The Lost World.
