Sinopsis

Samurai Code Practice explores bushido, the warrior code that profoundly shaped Japan's samurai class and its culture. Delving into the philosophy of honor, loyalty, and self-discipline, the book reveals how bushido dictated samurai behavior, influencing everything from battlefield conduct to artistic expression. Bushido wasn't just a set of rules; it was a comprehensive worldview impacting art, literature, and social structures.

The book traces bushido's development from early warrior traditions to its codification during the Edo period, highlighting the influences of Confucianism, Zen Buddhism, and Shintoism. It examines how these philosophies were synthesized into a unique ethical framework. Each chapter provides a comprehensive overview, beginning with historical origins and philosophical underpinnings before examining the application of these principles in daily life, their influence on Japanese art and literature, and their lasting legacy in modern Japan.

By drawing upon primary and secondary sources, the book offers valuable insights into the mindset of the samurai and their role in shaping Japanese history. It avoids jargon, presenting complex ideas in an accessible style suitable for anyone interested in Japanese history, culture, or philosophy, making it a valuable resource for understanding this influential ethical system.

Neem Karoli Baba or Maharaj-ji - was a guru, mystic, and devotee of Lord Hanuman. He is the spiritual master of a number of prominent Americans who traveled to India in the 1960s and 70s, including spiritual teachers Ram Dass, Bhagavan Das, and musicians Krishna Das and Jai Uttal. Maharaji was a lifelong adept of bhakti-yoga and encouraged service to others (seva) as the highest form of unconditional devotion to God.

He has been known by different names, through the years. He gave no discourses; the briefest, simplest stories were his teachings. Usually, he sat or lay on a wooden bench wrapped in a plaid blanket while a few devotees sat around him. Visitors came and went; they were given food, a few words, a nod, a pat on the head or back, and they were sent away. There was gossip and laughter for he loved to joke.

Maharaj-ji’s teachings were simple and universal. He often said, “Sub Ek” — All is One. He taught us to “love everyone, serve everyone, remember God, and tell the truth.” Strongly connected to Hanuman, Maharaj-ji taught in a non-traditional way that reflected the bhakti path of the heart. Here is the essence of his remarkable life and teachings

Dr. Richard Alpert, a former Harvard professor became the much-beloved spiritual teacher Baba Ram Das. His '70s iconic book, Be Here Now, turned on a generation to the deep, nonsectarian spirituality within us all. Krishna Das is an American vocalist known for performing Vedic devotional music known as kirtan. Bhagavan Das is an American yogi who lived in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. He is a bhakti yogi, kirtan singer, spiritual teacher, and writer. Baba Hari Dass practiced continual silence since 1952. This is the true story of each of the spiritual "Gang of four" and their master and deep inspiration Neem Karol Baba.

Finding Francis, finding family, freeing history

Francis is found. Beyond Francis, a family is found—in archival material that barely deigned to notice their existence. This is the story of Francis Sistrunk and her children, from enslavement into forced migration across South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. It spans decades before the Civil War and continues into post-emancipation America. A family story full of twists and turns, Finding Francis reclaims and honors those women who played an essential role in the historical survival and triumph of Black people during and after American slavery.

Elizabeth West has created a remarkable "biohistoriography" of everyday Black resistance, grounded in a determination to maintain enduring connections of family, kinship, and community despite the inhumanity and rapacity of slavery. There is inevitable heartbreak in these histories, but there is also an empowering strength and inspiration—the truth of these lives will indeed set us all free.

In ancient Greece, “no other practice was so universal than the consultation of oracles.” These holy sites were found in 260 locations around the Greek-speaking world, and they were considered the “most satisfactory means of ascertaining the future.” These sanctuaries were “set apart from the profane, ordinary world” and were in the beginning restricted to natural locations where the divine was thought to be “especially present.” They were set aside for special spiritual functions, and a state of purity was generally required of its participants. A historical tendency toward providing haven for criminals was based on the fear of shedding blood in a holy place, and the “fear that the evil magic would emanate from his curse.”
Despite the interest in Greek oracles, modern knowledge remains limited in certain respects, because cult history has become so intertwined with mythology that the lines separating one from another have been nearly lost. Modern scholars studying the oracles have tried to pull the shroud of mythology away from historical facts to illuminate the realities of the Greek cults, but the job has often proved trickier than imagined. If anything, the work of scholars has deepened the mysticism of the oracles rather than dispel it, in large measure due to documenting fascinating and mysterious stories about them. For example, much has been written about natural vapors and fumes that may have caused psychoactive effects in petitioners at oracles. Modern civilizations at times employ this argument to excuse the supposed ignorance of the ancient Greeks, and in some cases, such vapors have been identified and may indeed explain the activities at certain oracles. However, archaeologist Jelle de Boer, intimately associated with some of the most iconic Greek oracles, cautioned that “something can be extra-natural without being outright supernatural.”
