Sinopse

Sahara Crossings explores the transformative history of trans-Saharan trade routes and their profound impact on African societies. It reveals how these desert arteries fostered not only economic exchange but also cultural and political development, shaping empires like Ghana, Mali, and Songhai.

The book highlights the ingenuity of desert societies in adapting to harsh conditions, enabling the movement of valuable commodities such as gold, salt, and textiles across vast distances. The book examines the spread of Islam and the rise of powerful empires, emphasizing that the trade routes were more than just commercial pathways; they were vital conduits for cultural exchange and political influence.

By analyzing Arabic chronicles, archaeological findings, and other sources, Sahara Crossings challenges Eurocentric views of history, demonstrating Africa's significant role in global interconnectedness throughout the pre-colonial era.

The book unfolds by first detailing the geographical challenges and technological innovations, then explores the traded commodities and their impact, followed by case studies of major empires, and culminates with an analysis of the trade's decline and its enduring legacy.

This is a compilation of 4 different titles, which are about the following topics:
1: Charlie Chaplin was, at some point in history, the best paid actor in the world. He was famous for his comedy movies and his humor. He had an extensive career in acting, especially during World War 1, the Great Depression, and World War 2. What a fascinating time period in history to be a movie actor!
2: Marilyn Monroe has been part of the sexual revolution during the mid-20th century. Her influence in the movie industry, as an icon for attractiveness and femininity, have been noticed by hundreds of millions, even after her death. Did Marilyn Monroe have success? Yes. Was her life easy? Not by far. Her failed marriages, early childhood trauma, mood disorder, and some of the struggles with her sexuality, contracts, and Hollywood producers have made her life go up and down so much that I’m sure she would describe some moments as the ultimate bliss and others as a living hell.
3: Elvis Presley is the famous singer who caused so much controversy that he was hated and loved among most of the American people. His sexual moves, his novel way of putting songs together… there was just something about him that attracted the ladies and the media attention at the same time. Elvis didn’t grow up with wealth and fame. In a way, you could say he was living the American dream. However, he was kind of a bad boy as well, facing legal troubles, broken relationships and drug abuse.
4: James Dean was an icon for youth, differences in sexuality, and a successful Hollywood actor who made an impact on society and the American culture. His life was one of confusion and rebellion, but his attractiveness and suave attitude had a charm many could not resist. Some of his best movies got awards and were watched all over the country.

In the over 100 years since it sank on its maiden voyage, the Titanic has been the subject of endless fascination, as evidenced by the efforts to find its final resting spot, the museums full of its objects, and the countless books, documentaries, and movies made about the doomed ocean liner. Thanks to the dramatization of the Titanic’s sinking and the undying interest in the story, millions of people are familiar with various aspects of the ship’s demise, and the nearly 1,500 people who died in the North Atlantic in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. The sinking of the ship is still nearly as controversial now as it was over 100 years ago, and the drama is just as compelling.
In the century since the Titanic sank, public interest in the ship and its history has waxed and waned on a regular basis. There was a flurry of activity right after it went down, as people tried to wrap their minds around what happened, but the World Wars pushed attention elsewhere. Then, during the 1950s, scientists had the time and money to become interested in it again. While there were numerous attempts to find that ship during the 1970s, the mighty ship still kept her secrets, her dead and their possessions safely at the bottom of the sea, where only strange creature comfortable in the depths could disturb them.
As it turned out, the most famous wreck in the world would not be located until 1985, over 70 years after the ship sank that fateful April night. The discovery ignited a new flurry of interest in Titanic, including an interest in what the wreck still held, who those items belonged, to and what should be done with them. The 1997 blockbuster movie about the ship only stirred up more interest and controversy, both of which continue to this day.

Three great nonfiction works from the Nobel Prize–winning, Catholic, French author of Thérèse Desqueyroux.Saint Margaret of CortonaFor François Mauriac, Saint Margaret of Cortona became a source of fascination and solace during the Nazi occupation of France. During that time, feeling himself and all his countrymen to be among the downtrodden, he wrote this biography of the thirteenth-century Italian penitent who would become the patron saint of the homeless . . .Born in 1247 to a farming family in a small village outside Perugia, Margaret of Cortona was willful and reckless in her youth. At age seventeen, she became a wealthy man’s mistress—even bearing his son out of wedlock. But her life of sin ended when she found her lover murdered.Devoting herself to prayer and penance, Margaret eventually joined the Third Order of St. Francis and took a vow of poverty. She established a hospital for the poor and homeless at Cortona. On divine command, she challenged her own bishop for his lavish and warlike lifestyle. Canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1728, she became a patron saint of the downtrodden, including the falsely accused, homeless, orphaned, and mentally ill, as well as midwives, penitents, single mothers, reformed prostitutes, and third children.Letters on Art and LiteratureIn this collection of letters, Mauriacshares fascinating insights through correspondence with Albert Camus, Jean Cocteau, and other authors, artists, intellectuals, as well as the readers of his various articles and columns. The letters delve into a variety of topics—from the death of Georges Bernanos to the correspondence between Paul Claudel and Andre Gide, and the Routier youth movement.Proust’s Way The thinking and suffering of the author of Remembrance of Things Past are intimately exposed in these letters to Mauriac.
