Sinopse

Long before European exploration, vibrant trade networks flourished worldwide. Precolonial Trade sheds light on these largely unacknowledged indigenous economic systems. These systems involved complex trade routes and diverse goods, challenging Eurocentric views of global economic history. For instance, archaeological findings reveal sophisticated trade beads and pottery, while oral histories and early writings help trace the movement of goods and ideas across continents.

The book examines precolonial trade routes and economic systems in regions like the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. It highlights the diverse forms of currency, credit, and social organization that governed trade in different regions. By focusing on indigenous traders' perspectives, the book offers a unique perspective on global economic history.

Beginning with an introduction to the theoretical framework, the book progresses through regional case studies, each chapter examining unique trade routes and goods. The conclusion synthesizes findings, comparing different regions and highlighting the lasting legacy of precolonial trade on contemporary societies.

It is the most fabled and storied journey in American history. From 1804-1806, the first expedition across the North American continent was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, who had recently bought a vast swath of territory from France. Though he knew he had bought a huge amount of land, Jefferson wasn’t entirely sure of what he had bought, so he asked a team led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to traverse the continent until they reached the Pacific, studying everything from the ecology to geography along the way to get an understanding of the country’s new region.
Lewis and Clark would find far more than they bargained for. The 33 members who made the trip came into contact with about two dozen Native American tribes, many of whom helped the men survive the journey. Though they suffered deaths on their way west, the group ultimately reached the Pacific coast and got back to St. Louis in 1806, having drawn up nearly 150 maps and giving America a good idea of much of what lay west.
As a young woman who was married to a French trapper from Quebec, Sacagawea happened to be in the right place at the right time for the legendary Lewis and Clark expedition, which set off for the Pacific coast after President Thomas Jefferson negotiated the Louisiana Purchase with France. The young Shoshone girl acted as a guide and interpreter for the expedition, helping it safely travel thousands of miles west from North Dakota to the Pacific over unfamiliar ground and amongst unfamiliar peoples. Put simply, the expedition could not have succeeded without her.

The Chavín civilization, one of the earliest and most influential cultures of ancient Peru, emerged in the Andean highlands around 900 BCE. It was a formative force in pre-Columbian history, laying the groundwork for later civilizations that dominated the region. The rise of Chavín was deeply connected to its strategic location, the innovations of its people, and the unique blend of religious and cultural influences that shaped its identity.
The Andean region, with its diverse geography of mountains, valleys, and coastal plains, played a crucial role in the development of early societies. The people who would come to form the Chavín civilization first settled in highland areas, where they mastered agricultural techniques suited to the challenging environment. The cultivation of staple crops such as maize, potatoes, and quinoa allowed for population growth and the establishment of permanent settlements. Llamas and alpacas provided transportation, wool, and meat, further supporting the stability of these early communities. Over time, these settlements evolved into more complex societies, characterized by social hierarchies and specialized labor.
One of the key factors that contributed to the emergence of the Chavín civilization was its strategic position at the crossroads of major trade routes. Chavín de Huántar, the civilization’s most important ceremonial center, was located in a valley that connected the coast, highlands, and jungle regions. This prime location allowed Chavín culture to serve as a unifying force in the Andes, facilitating the exchange of goods, ideas, and religious beliefs among different groups. As traders and pilgrims traveled to Chavín de Huántar, they encountered a sophisticated society with an advanced knowledge of art, architecture, and religion, all of which helped spread Chavín influence throughout the region.
