Summary

Minoan Society explores the fascinating world of the Minoans, a Bronze Age civilization that thrived on ancient Crete. This book delves into their daily life, economic systems, and spiritual beliefs, offering a comprehensive look at their unique culture.

The Minoans developed a sophisticated palatial economy, where palaces served as centers for storage, redistribution, and craft production, showcasing a complex societal structure.

Intriguingly, their religious practices centered on female deities, setting them apart from other Bronze Age cultures.

The book challenges previous interpretations, arguing that the Minoans were not merely a precursor to the Mycenaeans but a distinct civilization with a vibrant artistic tradition.

Examining archaeological finds from sites like Knossos and Akrotiri, alongside Linear A texts, it provides an updated perspective on Minoan life.

The book progresses by first introducing the geographical and chronological context, then exploring the economic foundations, delving into religious practices, and finally considering factors leading to their decline.

This approach connects Minoan society to broader themes of art history, religious studies, and economics.

When The Case for Animal Rights was published in 1983 it rapidly became an acknowledged classic of moral philosophy, and its author, Tom Regan (1938–2017), was recognized as an intellectual leader within the animal rights movement. Twenty years later, Case was reissued with a new and fully considered preface, in which Regan responded to his critics and defended the book's revolutionary position. Now, forty years after its original publication, this foundational text is available as an audiobook. In addition to the complete text of the revised 2002 edition, the audiobook includes a recording made by Tom Regan in 2001, in which he reflects on why he wrote The Case for Animal Rights, how it compares with Peter Singer's Animal Liberation, and how his thinking evolved as he was writing the book. The audiobook also features an essay by philosopher Gary Comstock on Tom Regan's contribution to, and place within, the history of thinking about our obligations to nonhuman animals over the last half-century.
The audiobook of The Case for Animal Rights is a production of the Culture & Animals Foundation, a nonprofit co-founded by Tom Regan in 1985. Both the book and the e-book of Case are available from the University of California Press.
"Unquestionably the best work yet to appear in its field, surpassing even Peter Singer's famous Animal Liberation in originality, thoroughness, and rigor."—Choice
"The Case for Animal Rights is beyond question the most important philosophical contribution to animal rights and is a major work in moral philosophy."—Animal Law Review

All living beings want to be eternally fulfilled and happy, without misery, without suffering. All of our struggles and all of our desires are to become fulfilled, it doesn't matter if we are fat or fit, poor or rich, black or white, this country or that country everybody across the board wants to be limitless, feel fulfilled, feel lasting happiness without any misery.
According to the ancient Rishis, the true source of happiness lies within you. Even though many people, especially spiritual seekers, intuitively understand that the true source of happiness is within, their day-to-day behaviour doesn't seem to reflect this understanding at all. Because there is some confusion about this fact, a strong conviction that happiness is within is missing. The experience of fullness is missing. The path of self-inquiry is a method of Jnana yoga the Yoga of Knowledge. It is an inquiry into, 'Who or what am I?' This is said to be the direct path to overcoming all the suffering and finding lasting fulfilment. Made famous by the great 20th-century saint, Sri Ramana Maharshi, the origin of this is in the ancient Indian philosophical texts Upanishads.
Unless we know what or who we are, how can we know what we truly seek? According to the yoga of knowledge, the root cause of all our suffering is due to our mistaken conception of ourselves, So, it's not due to the problems in the world. It's not due to financial hardship. It's not due to relationship problems. It's not even due to physical or mental problems. It's due to a wrong idea. It's due to ignorance of our true nature. We know we exist, but what we are is not very clear to us. And to discover what we truly are is the goal of the yoga of knowledge, and self-inquiry is the method. This path is an inquiry into oneself and not getting caught in the humdrum of existence, which is too noisy. Listening to the music of the true self.

Three great nonfiction works from the Nobel Prize–winning, Catholic, French author of Thérèse Desqueyroux.Saint Margaret of CortonaFor François Mauriac, Saint Margaret of Cortona became a source of fascination and solace during the Nazi occupation of France. During that time, feeling himself and all his countrymen to be among the downtrodden, he wrote this biography of the thirteenth-century Italian penitent who would become the patron saint of the homeless . . .Born in 1247 to a farming family in a small village outside Perugia, Margaret of Cortona was willful and reckless in her youth. At age seventeen, she became a wealthy man’s mistress—even bearing his son out of wedlock. But her life of sin ended when she found her lover murdered.Devoting herself to prayer and penance, Margaret eventually joined the Third Order of St. Francis and took a vow of poverty. She established a hospital for the poor and homeless at Cortona. On divine command, she challenged her own bishop for his lavish and warlike lifestyle. Canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1728, she became a patron saint of the downtrodden, including the falsely accused, homeless, orphaned, and mentally ill, as well as midwives, penitents, single mothers, reformed prostitutes, and third children.Letters on Art and LiteratureIn this collection of letters, Mauriacshares fascinating insights through correspondence with Albert Camus, Jean Cocteau, and other authors, artists, intellectuals, as well as the readers of his various articles and columns. The letters delve into a variety of topics—from the death of Georges Bernanos to the correspondence between Paul Claudel and Andre Gide, and the Routier youth movement.Proust’s Way The thinking and suffering of the author of Remembrance of Things Past are intimately exposed in these letters to Mauriac.

“Here at the stud ranch, you’ll learn how to train even the most aggressive males. You’ll learn how to wear away independence, coaxing them into a state of docile obedience.”
It sounded like an incredible opportunity—working as a ranch hand up in the mountains for the summer. I didn’t realize why I was actually hired though…
Alone in the barn with three older ranchers, I stand naked while they run a brush through my hair and tell me what a pretty pony boy I am. It feels so good…I want this.
The heavy scent of their sweat causes my legs to tremble as I sink to the filthy ground. On my hands and knees, I’m ready to be mounted for the first time.
    I’m a college football stallion.
    I’m being broken.
