Sinopse

Knowledge Centers explores the vital role of historical institutions in preserving, expanding, and transmitting knowledge across cultures and generations, focusing primarily on the ancient and medieval periods. It examines how these centers actively shaped intellectual history, influencing advancements from scientific discoveries to philosophical thought. The book argues these centers were not merely repositories of information, but dynamic hubs where existing knowledge was critiqued, expanded upon, and disseminated.

The book delves into prominent examples, such as the Library of Alexandria, an early model for organizing vast amounts of information, and the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, which preserved Greek texts and fostered advancements in mathematics and astronomy. Medieval European universities also feature prominently, highlighting their contribution to scholasticism and law.

The book uniquely adopts a comparative approach, contrasting different types of knowledge centers across cultures and time periods to identify common themes and unique features, avoiding Eurocentric perspectives.

Concluding with an analysis of how these historical centers continue to influence modern systems of education and research, the book demonstrates the enduring relevance of ancient practices in today's interconnected world. By drawing from primary sources like surviving manuscripts and contemporary accounts, Knowledge Centers offers a multidisciplinary perspective on intellectual history and cultural development.

The Spanish nobility continues to be influential in the early 21st century in politics, academia, and the economy. The polarized socio-cultural environment in Spain in the early decades of the millennium is paralleled by an increasingly divisive political discourse and deadlock in terms of governance. Understanding the subcultures of the most influential socio-political groups is important to be able to interpret the political developments. A vast array of studies have been conducted about the rise of the extreme left but there is a dearth of studies dealing with the impact of the traditional nobility in contemporary Spain. The present study presents an emic model of elite culture through the application of a grounded theory approach to texts released by five of the main noble associations in Spain during the last ten years. An inductive approach focuses on the identification of important themes and concepts as expressed and understood by the participants. Traditional noble associations are the focus of the study, in particular, the associations under Royal patronage. The resulting emic model aims to map the mores, norms, and values of a highly visible social group about which there are very few sociological and anthropological studies.

Meet two gunfighters, one flamboyant preacher, one serial killer and one very short subway carrying passengers back in time to discover more of Fort Worth. Throughout history, ancient relics have fascinated explorers, historians, and scientists alike. These mysterious artifacts, often shrouded in myth and legend, offer glimpses into the past that challenge our understanding of ancient civilizations. Some relics reveal technological advancements that seem far beyond the capabilities of their time, while others carry spiritual or symbolic significance that continues to intrigue scholars today. The presence of these objects raises important questions: Were ancient societies far more advanced than previously believed? Could these artifacts point to lost knowledge, forgotten technologies, or even connections to otherworldly influences?

The allure of these relics lies not only in their historical value but also in their ability to inspire wonder. Objects such as the Antikythera Mechanism, an intricate device often called the world's first computer, continue to puzzle researchers with their complexity. Meanwhile, the Baghdad Battery—a seemingly simple clay jar—has sparked debates over whether ancient cultures harnessed electrical power long before modern discoveries. These examples, among many others, demonstrate how relics can rewrite accepted narratives about humanity's technological progress.

A rare study that transforms our understanding of why youth die by suicide, why youth suicide clusters happen, and how to stop them

In Life under Pressure, Anna S. Mueller and Seth Abrutyn investigate the social roots of youth suicide and why certain places weather disproportionate incidents of adolescent suicides and suicide clusters. Through close examination of kids' lives in a community repeatedly rocked by youth suicide clusters, Mueller and Abrutyn reveal how the social worlds that youth inhabit and the various messages they learn in those spaces—about who they are supposed to be, mental illness, and help-seeking—shape their feelings about themselves and in turn their risk of suicide. With great empathy, Mueller and Abrutyn also identify the moments when adults unintentionally fail kids by not talking to them about suicide, teaching them how to seek help, or helping them grieve.

Through stories of survival, resilience, and even rebellion, Mueller and Abrutyn show how social environments can cause suicide and how they can be changed to help kids discover a life worth living. By revealing what it is like to live and die in one community, Life under Pressure offers tangible solutions to one of the twenty-first century's most tragic public health problems.
