Synopsis

"Irish Famine Scale" offers a deep dive into the Great Irish Famine, examining it not merely as a natural disaster but as a socio-political catastrophe. The book analyzes how existing social structures and the British government's policies amplified the devastation caused by the potato blight between 1845 and 1852. Intriguingly, the study reveals how seemingly well-intentioned relief efforts sometimes worsened the situation, while mass migration reshaped not only Ireland but also the demographics of countries like the United States and Australia. This historical analysis progresses through three distinct parts. Initially, it sets the stage by describing pre-famine Ireland, its reliance on the potato, and existing socio-economic vulnerabilities. The second part meticulously dissects British governmental strategies such as public work programs and the Poor Laws, evaluating their actual impact using parliamentary records and contemporary accounts. Finally, the book turns to the mass migrations spurred by the famine, tracing the journeys of Irish emigrants and assessing the diasporic consequences. Employing a balanced, data-driven approach, "Irish Famine Scale" avoids sensationalism, instead combining qualitative narratives with quantitative data derived from census records and shipping manifests. This comprehensive approach provides students and general readers an opportunity to understand the complex interplay of factors that transformed a crop failure into one of history's most heartbreaking events.

"Todd Starnes is a fierce defender of freedom and a great patriot. He has seen, and understands, what is happening to our country like few others—his book is absolutely terrific, a must read!" —President Trump

President Biden ushered in a dark winter of malaise across our great nation. He snuffed out Lady Liberty's bright beacon of hope and brought despair to the land. And now we stand at a time of great choosing. Do we choose the path that leads to freedom or the path that leads to tyranny?

We face difficult days, but not hopeless days. Together, we can restore the Republic and reclaim our standing in the world. But first, we must remember our roots and return to the values that made our nation great. A deep and abiding desire for freedom and liberty, girded by faith in God, is the essence of who we are. Those are the precepts that must be reaffirmed if America is to be saved.

    NPR Great Read of 2016
Author and Guardian US columnist Jessica Valenti has been leading the national conversation on gender and politics for over a decade. Now, in a darkly funny and bracing memoir, Valenti explores the toll that sexism takes from the every day to the existential.
Sex Object explores the painful, funny, embarrassing, and sometimes illegal moments that shaped Valenti’s adolescence and young adulthood in New York City, revealing a much shakier inner life than the confident persona she has cultivated as one of the most recognizable feminists of her generation.
In the tradition of writers like Joan Didion and Mary Karr, this literary memoir is sure to shock those already familiar with Valenti’s work and enthrall those who are just finding it.
“Jessica Valenti is a breath of fresh air. She offers the kind of raw honesty that can feel like a punch in the gut, but leaves you with the warmth of a deep embrace.” — Ms. Magazine
“One of the most visible and successful feminists of her generation.”  — Washington Post
“A gutsy young third wave feminist.” — The New York Times
