Sinopsis

Colonial Conflicts explores the history of conflicts arising from colonialism, examining how these struggles shaped global boundaries and the identities of nations. The book delves into the diverse forms of resistance employed by colonized populations, from armed rebellions to cultural preservation, and analyzes the long-lasting impact of these conflicts on post-colonial societies. Colonial conflicts were integral to the formation of modern nation-states and the evolution of global power structures, influencing everything from political instability to economic inequality.

The book begins by outlining the major waves of colonialism and the motivations of colonizing powers. It then examines specific conflicts, such as the Algerian War of Independence, analyzing their causes, consequences, and impact on local populations. By exploring these historical events, Colonial Conflicts provides vital context for understanding contemporary geopolitical dynamics and the persistent legacies of colonialism, including issues of national identity and global power structures.

Synthesizing findings from various case studies, the book draws broader conclusions about the nature of colonial conflicts and their enduring legacies. Using primary and secondary sources, including archival documents and personal accounts, it connects historical analysis to contemporary debates about globalization and international relations. This approach offers a comprehensive understanding of how colonial conflicts continue to shape our world.

This must-have anthology presents a collection of alternative approaches to reading the tarot for those looking to gain new and deeper insight—especially for marginalized folk who don’t see themselves reflected in traditional presentations of the tarot.   Cassandra Snow’s groundbreaking book Queering the Tarot helped change the shape of tarot discourse for scores of new readers to reclaim this ancient practice in their own way. Tarot in Other Words opens doors for these brilliant tarotists, offering unique insights and concepts for tarot readers of all levels.   The anthology, presented in two parts—(1) Finding Ourselves in the Tarot and (2) Finding the Tarot in Ourselves—comprises ten essays that shine a light on the tarot from multiple queer perspectives. Understanding queerness—and why it matters in tarot—can teach all of us so much about not just gender and sexuality but also how and why we should liberate ourselves in the first place. These essays on queerness show us that who we are is right, beautiful, and sacred. Tarot in Other Words is a necessary and overdue addition to the tarot canon that allows a number of queer voices to come together to share their tarot views and help fledgling and intermediate tarot readers discover their own voice in the process.  Contributors include: Asali Earthwork, Charlie Claire Burgess, Maria the Arcane, Maria Minnis, Junauda Petrus, Siri Vincent Plouff, Rebecca Scolnick, Cassandra Snow, Taylor Ursula, Meg Jones Wall

Brought to you by Altrusian Grace Media. The Mirror of Alchemy is a short alchemical manual, known in Latin as Speculum Alchemiae. Translated in 1597, it was only the second alchemical text printed in the English language. Long ascribed to Roger Bacon, the work is more likely the product of an anonymous author who wrote between the 13th and the 15th centuries.

Thomas Malthus, an English economist and cleric, published his influential work "An Essay on the Principle of Population" in 1798. The book introduced the idea that population growth would outstrip resources in the long run, leading to catastrophic consequences such as famine, disease, and war.
Malthus argued that population growth was exponential, while resources grew at a much slower arithmetic rate. This meant that over time, the population would inevitably outstrip the ability of the land to produce food, leading to a "positive check" on population growth in the form of famine, disease, or war.
Malthus also identified a "preventative check" on population growth, which he saw as the moral restraint of individuals to delay marriage and childbirth until they could support a family. However, he believed that this restraint would only be effective for the wealthy and educated classes, while the poor would continue to have large families out of necessity.
Malthus's ideas were controversial at the time, as they challenged the prevailing belief in progress and the idea that human ingenuity and technological advances could overcome any resource constraints. However, his ideas gained traction in the 19th century as Europe experienced a series of famines and population pressures, and his work influenced later economists such as David Ricardo and John Stuart Mill.
Critics of Malthus have argued that his predictions did not come to pass, as the world has experienced significant improvements in food production and living standards over the last two centuries. However, Malthus's ideas continue to influence debates on population growth, resource constraints, and environmental sustainability.

The lives of five socialist women and their legacy for modern-day feminists

Red Valkyries explores the history of socialist feminism in Eastern Europe. Through the revolutionary careers of five prominent socialist women active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries—the aristocratic Bolshevik Alexandra Kollontai; the radical pedagogue Nadezhda Krupskaya; the polyamorous firebrand Inessa Armand; the deadly sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko; and the partisan, scientist, and global women's activist Elena Lagadinova—Kristen Ghodsee tells the story of the personal challenges faced by earlier generations of radicals.

None of these women was a perfect leftist. Their lives were filled with inner conflicts, contradictions, and sometimes outrageous privilege. But they managed to fight for their own political projects with perseverance and dedication. Always walking a fine line between the need for class solidarity and the desire to force their sometimes callous male colleagues to take women's issues seriously, these women pursued novel solutions with many lessons for those who might follow in their footsteps.
