Sinopse

"Ancient Trade Routes" explores the vital role of commerce in shaping ancient civilizations. Examining networks like the Silk Road, Spice Routes, and Trans-Saharan trade, the book reveals how these pathways facilitated not just the exchange of goods, but also the spread of ideas, technologies, and cultural practices. It highlights that the rise and fall of empires were often intertwined with their ability to control or participate in these trade networks, leading to the interconnectedness of societies across vast distances.

The book progresses from foundational concepts of supply and demand to detailed analyses of each major trade route, using archaeological records and literary sources to support its arguments. It demonstrates that ancient commerce was a transformative force, impacting political landscapes, fostering cultural interactions, and spurring technological innovation. For example, the demand for silk spurred technological advancements in China, while the spice trade influenced maritime exploration.

Ultimately, "Ancient Trade Routes" argues that commerce was a driving force in shaping the ancient world, challenging traditional narratives focused solely on political events. Its interdisciplinary approach, combining insights from archaeology, economics, and anthropology, provides a comprehensive understanding of how these trade networks influenced globalization and cultural exchange, leaving a lasting legacy on contemporary society.

In October 1941, Hitler launched Operation Typhoon—the German drive to capture Moscow and knock the Soviet Union out of the war. As the last chance to escape the dire implications of a winter campaign, Hitler directed seventy-five German divisions, almost two million men and three of Germany's four panzer groups into the offensive, resulting in huge victories at Viaz'ma and Briansk—among the biggest battles of the Second World War. David Stahel's groundbreaking new account of Operation Typhoon captures the perspectives of both the German high command and individual soldiers, revealing that despite success on the battlefield the wider German war effort was in far greater trouble than is often acknowledged. Germany's hopes of final victory depended on the success of the October offensive but the autumn conditions and the stubborn resistance of the Red Army ensured that the capture of Moscow was anything but certain.

We are trained from the youngest of ages to imagine that love is a force outside of ourselves; that if you keep swiping, one day your prince will come; that love is something you have to look for, work for, diet for.
The truth is: we are creators of love, not discoverers of love, and until we realise that love comes out of us, rather than to us, we'll never really get it or feel it.
Conor Creighton learned this the hard way with a string of tumultuous relationships in his past. That was until, through meditation, he woke up to the powerful force that is self-love and watched as his relationships and the whole world transformed around him.
In a unique hybrid of memoir and self-help, here Conor uses his life lessons to help readers wake up to the truth about love. A modern manifesto and spiritual guide to relationships, The Truth About Love makes a daring call to action, showing how to change yourself and the world around you through the courageous act of opening your heart.

The Pacific Theater of World War II was the culmination of decades of tension, territorial disputes, and ideological differences between Japan and the Allied Powers, particularly the United States. The roots of the conflict can be traced back to Japan’s rise as an imperial power in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Seeking to expand its influence across East Asia and the Pacific, Japan embarked on a campaign of military conquest and economic domination, often at the expense of its neighbors.

By the 1930s, Japan’s aggressive expansionist policies became more pronounced, beginning with the invasion of Manchuria in 1931 and escalating with the full-scale war against China in 1937. These actions alarmed Western powers, who viewed Japan’s ambitions as a direct challenge to their interests in the region. The United States, in particular, responded by imposing economic sanctions and cutting off vital supplies, including oil, to curtail Japan’s militarism. However, these measures only further inflamed tensions, as Japan viewed them as an existential threat to its survival and growth as a global power.

The turning point came on December 7, 1941, with Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. This audacious assault on the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Hawaii aimed to neutralize American naval power and secure Japan’s dominance in the Pacific. Although the attack achieved significant tactical success, crippling much of the U.S. fleet, it also galvanized American public opinion and led to the United States’ entry into World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor marked the beginning of a brutal and protracted conflict that would span nearly four years and claim millions of lives.

This book comprises five classic works of Chinese mysticism. Culturally, these are the companion works to Confucius’ thoughts, as expanded by Mencius. Confucianism is very much the Apollonian side of Chinese culture. It focuses on matters of ethics, hierarchy, responsibility, and social obligation. Daoism is the other side of the coin, focused on abstraction and uncertainty.
The two translators included in this volume were very different men. While they wrote in the same period, their audiences were distinct from one another, and this comes through in their differing approaches to the original texts they are working with. One was a missionary, looking to ensure that his fellow spreaders of the word could understand as completely and correctly as possible the culture that they had come into. The other was a curator at the British Museum, who popularized the first English translations for a thoroughly domestic market.

Vanishing Point - The Search for...

At the height of World War II, a B-24 Liberator bomber vanished with its crew while on a training mission over upstate New York. The final hours and ultimate resting place of pilot Keith Ponder and seven other US aviators aboard the plane remain mysteries to this day. The tale is at once a compelling instance of loss on the World War II American home front and a more extensive, largely unreported history. Ponder—a twenty-one-year-old from rural Mississippi—and his crew were tragically unexceptional casualties in the monumental effort to recruit and train an air force en masse to counter the global conquest of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. More than fifteen thousand American airmen and, in some cases, women burned, crashed, or fell to their deaths in stateside training accidents during the war—their lives and stories shuffled away in piles of Air Force bureaucracy.

The forgotten story of Getaway Gertie was originally inspired by summer evenings around the campfire on the shores of Lake Ontario, where parts of the plane have washed up. Building on those campfire tales, Wilber deftly connects myth with fact and memory with historicity. The result is a vivid portrait of the forgotten soldier of the home front and a new take on the meaning of wartime sacrifice as the last survivors of the Greatest Generation pass away.
