This audiobook narrated by acclaimed critic and author Michael Rosen breathes new life into the political tales first published in British workers' magazines

With additional narration by Lisa Coleman, Ric Jerrom, Peter Kenny, Miriam Margolyes, John Telfer, and Samuel West

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, unique tales inspired by traditional literary forms appeared frequently in socialist-leaning British periodicals, such as the Clarion, Labour Leader, and Social Democrat. Based on familiar genres—the fairy tale, fable, allegory, parable, and moral tale—and penned by a range of lesser-known and celebrated authors, including Schalom Asch, Charles Allen Clarke, Frederick James Gould, and William Morris, these stories were meant to entertain readers of all ages—and some challenged the conventional values promoted in children's literature for the middle class. In Workers' Tales, acclaimed critic and author Michael Rosen brings together more than forty of the best and most enduring examples of these stories in one beautiful volume.

Throughout, the tales in this collection exemplify themes and ideas related to work and the class system, sometimes in wish-fulfilling ways. In "Tom Hickathrift," a little, poor person gets the better of a gigantic, wealthy one. In "The Man Without a Heart," a man learns about the value of basic labor after testing out more privileged lives. And in "The Political Economist and the Flowers," two contrasting gardeners highlight the cold heart of Darwinian competition. Rosen's informative introduction describes how such tales advocated for contemporary progressive causes and countered the dominant celebration of Britain's imperial values.

Provocative and enlightening, Workers' Tales presents voices of resistance that are more relevant than ever before.

“A fortune in hidden gold! That certainly sounds mighty interesting.”Frank Hardy folded up the letter he had just been reading aloud to his brother.“Dad has all the luck,” replied Joe. “I’d give anything to be working with him on a case like that.” “Me, too. This case is a bit out of the ordinary.” “Where was the letter postmarked?” “Somewhere in Montana. A gold-mining camp called Lucky Bottom.” “Montana! Gee, but I wish he could have taken us with him. We’ve never been more than two hundred miles from home.” “And I’ve never seen a mine in my life, much less a real mining camp.” The Hardy boys looked at one another regretfully. They had just received a letter from their father, Fenton Hardy, an internationally famous detective, who had been called West but a fortnight previous on a mysterious mission. The letter gave the boys their first inkling of the nature of the case that had summoned their father from Bayport, on the Atlantic coast, to the mining country of Montana.

In the heart of New York City in Central Park, stood the Central Park Zoo—a haven for creatures great and small. The zoo was abuzz with excitement as the holiday season approached, and anticipation hung in the frosty December air.
It was a crisp morning when a delivery truck rumbled to a stop outside the zoo gates. Zookeepers and staff gathered around; curiosity piqued as they wondered what surprise awaited them. The truck's doors swung open, revealing a sight that took their breath away—a graceful giraffe, her long neck craned elegantly as she peered out.
"Is that...?" gasped one of the zookeepers, unable to believe their eyes.
"Yes, it's a giraffe!" exclaimed another, awe-struck by the unexpected arrival.
The giraffe, named Kazi, had travelled all the way from the vast plains of South Africa to join the Central Park Zoo family. With gentle coaxing from the zookeepers, Kazi stepped out of the truck, her large brown eyes taking in her new surroundings with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.
"Welcome, Kazi!" called out the zoo director, a warm smile spreading across his face. "You're going to love it here."
And so began Kazi's journey in her new home. At first, she felt a bit out of place among the concrete jungle of New York City, far from the open savannas of her homeland. But as she explored her enclosure and met the other animals, she soon discovered that friendship knows no boundaries.
The monkeys, with their playful antics, were the first to greet Kazi. Swinging from branch to branch, they chattered excitedly, inviting her to join in their games. Kazi found herself amused by their antics, her long neck craning to watch their acrobatic displays with a mixture of wonder and amusement.
