  The fiction and poetry of Queer Little Nightmares reimagines monsters old and new through a queer lens, subverting the horror gaze to celebrate ideas and identities canonically feared in monster lit. Throughout history, monsters have appeared in popular culture as stand-ins for the non-conforming, the marginalized of society. Pushed into the shadows as objects of fear, revulsion, and hostility, these characters have long conjured fascination and self-identification in the LGBTQ+ community, and over time, monsters have become queer icons. 
  In Queer Little Nightmares, creatures of myth and folklore seek belonging and intimate connection, cryptids challenge their outcast status, and classic movie monsters explore the experience of coming into queerness. The characters in these stories and poems — the Minotaur camouflaged in a crowd of cosplayers, a pubescent werewolf, a Hindu revenant waiting to reunite with her lover, a tender-hearted kaiju, a lagoon creature aching for the swimmers above him, a ghost of Pride past — relish their new sparkle in the spotlight. Pushing against tropes that have historically been used to demonize, the queer creators of this collection instead ask: What does it mean to be (and to love) a monster?

  Now I'm Photogenic and Other Stories I Tell Myself is a collection of ten playfully strange and unsettling stories, some realistic and some surreal.   It’s easy to make people sad, easier still to make them cry. And while there is much tragedy to be found in these stories, Tosin Balogun’s first short-story collection is interested mainly in arresting the human condition at its most cockeyed. 
  In Wonder, Your People employs a maximalist, mournfully humorous style that tangles easily with Balogun’s Nigerian heritage. The stories are impossible yet grounded in an odd relatability. “Mr. Penis, All the Way Down," a surprisingly poignant tale of a man who castrates himself to fix his erectile dysfunction, pairs naturally with “Elele,” a simple recounting of a tiny village in Southern Nigeria. Similarly, “The Future, The Future” (about a man whose wife transforms into a house) is trailed by stories about lonely cold evenings and emotional support air-fryers and masturbating crackheads. 
  Borrowing as much from David Foster Wallace as from Wole Soyinka, In Wonder, Your People is in the business of relentlessly confounding both itself and its readers, all while holding on to the hope that it may ultimately land on something if not beautiful, then at least true.

  Beyond the Clinic - Dr Musa's...

  As Musa goes through the final years of medical school, he begins to engage in activities outside clinical work, starting with organising the annual medical dinner with limited funding during his fourth year. After his internship, he is posted to a hospital that becomes besieged during the war. There, he finds himself drinking beer at a bar belonging to a disreputable woman who is a concubine of the commander of the losing army and is also trying to woo the commander of the victorious one. After the war, Dr Musa finds himself organising a wedding for a colleague with insufficient funds. Meanwhile, the night before the wedding, the groom and best man are accosted by 'the Twins' – two sisters known to seduce any man they desired. When Dr Musa drives a sports car, he becomes vulnerable to seduction by single women until his niece comes to occupy the empty seat in his car as a chaperone. His car adventures include being carjacked in Nairobi. He is also kissed on the lips in Geneva by two ladies whom he helps to jump-start their car, and again in Jakarta by a woman he assists in getting her car out of a tight spot. Dr Musa's life outside the clinic was characterised by one crisis after another. These included: using his personal account to manage funds from his employer; his daughters warding off a 'lady-in-red' who had fallen for him in Amsterdam; having to answer his young daughter's question about when he started to have sex; and responding to his granddaughter's query about whether he was married. He equates these crises to a pivotal moment during a friendly football match between Ugandan and Kenyan doctors. In that game, he kicked the ball high in the air, not knowing if it would land in his own goalposts or on the opponent's side. He only discovered later that it had landed safely on the opponent's side. In the end, he wonders whether one can survive by simply 'kicking the ball' in a crisis, reacting without planning, and get by in life without strategy, relying on the Grace of God.
