Sinossi

The greatest of all American countries is comparatively the least developed. Brazil, with her 3,300,000 square miles of territory, four thousand miles of coast, and her incomparable system of great waterways, has the largest extent of wild and almost unknown country of any political division of the New World; she, and she alone, owns thousands of square miles of forests where no one has set foot but the native, still really living in the Stone Age, mountain ranges never properly prospected, with their deposits of minerals scarcely scratched, and millions of acres of grassy uplands waiting for the farmer and the stock-raiser.
Brazil is not scantily developed because little has been done; on the contrary, a wonderful amount of development has been accomplished, but the period of expansion has been short and the country so great and varied that whole regions remain out of the track of progress. Until a century ago, when Dom João opened Brazilian ports to international commerce, Brazil lay in a trance, bound hand and foot to Portugal, isolated from the world. Her erection into a separate monarchy found her without capital, without education, for she had neither adequate primary nor technical schools, without a press, and without any knowledge of her own resources except that gathered by the interior raids, wanderings and settlements of her own hardy people.

In "Black Africa: The Economic and Cultural Basis for a Federated State," Senegalese scholar Cheikh Anta Diop boldly calls for the unification of Black African nations. He argues that colonial borders fractured regions with shared cultures and economies, hindering progress. Diop proposes a unified state for greater global influence, emphasizing cultural revival and a common African language. Though debated, his vision continues to inspire Pan-Africanism and discussions on African unity and development.

In 1971, a time before metal detectors and body scans, a single man boards an Air Canada DC-8 flight with a sawed-off shotgun, 54 sticks of dynamite, a parachute and a desperate plan for a $1.5 million ransom. But it's the two twisted wires in an ordinary Woolco shopping bag that will hold an entire plane hostage.
Trapped at 37,000 feet, flight attendant Mary Dohey becomes an unwilling participant in a deadly game, forced to hold live detonator wires for hours. One wrong move, one trembling hand, and the aircraft could explode. Around her, passengers wrestle with their own mortality while the hijacker, Paul Cini, plays a high-stakes game of psychological warfare with authorities on the ground.
But in this meticulously researched true-crime thriller, nothing is quite what it seems. As the FBI, Air Canada and the flight's crew race against time to prevent disaster, the truth behind Cini's elaborate deception slowly unravels—revealing an even more chilling reality about how vulnerable we all are to the power of suggestion.
"The Doomsday Flight" masterfully weaves together the intense drama of a hijacking, the psychological complexity of human nature, and the fascinating history of an era when the skies were a lawless frontier. Drawing from extensive interviews, photographs, newspaper archives, and witness accounts, which are all included in the book, this heart-pounding narrative puts readers in the cabin alongside passengers and crew as they face what they believe to be their final hours.
Taking place just days before the copycat infamous D.B. Cooper hijacking, this is perfect for fans of "Captain Phillips", "The Taking of Pelham 123" and "Air Force One". This unforgettable story exposes how the most dangerous weapons aren't always the ones we can see.

Discover a thrilling true story of treachery, deceit, hope and despair.
From the moment Mary, Queen of Scots set foot on English soil in 1568 until her execution at Fotheringhay Castle on 8 February 1587, she was the prisoner of her cousin, Elizabeth I. Unlike Mary's time on the Scottish throne, the dramatic events of these years – almost half her life – took place while she was a captive. But while trouble was perpetually simmering beyond her prison walls, within them Mary was constantly plotting. Only towards the end did she lose faith in returning to her homeland as rightful ruler.
This is the story of Mary's tumultuous later years, told through the many atmospheric locations where she was confined. Drawing on the latest research, including a treasure trove of recently decoded letters, Exile sheds fascinating new light on her captivity and the charged political climate of the period. Reading like a 16th-century thriller, this account of treachery, deceit, hope and despair is a penetrating and enthralling psychological portrait of one of history's endlessly fascinating queens.

    Risque Business - Breastaurants...

Risqué Business serves up the breastaurant industry, where food service, sex appeal, identity, and gender politics mix.
Risqué Business explores the rise and ongoing cultural reckoning of "breastaurants": sports bar–style restaurants like Hooters and Twin Peaks, which have long relied on the sexualized presentation of female servers to attract a mostly straight, male clientele. Ty Matejowsky, professor of anthropology at the University of Central Florida, is uniquely positioned in America's foundational, breastaurant-saturated landscape. From this vantage, he offers a well-balanced account that draws on pop culture, media analysis, and contemporary gender politics. He delivers a smart, layered analysis of how breastaurants commodify youth and femininity, uphold retrograde masculinity, and serve as symbolic battlegrounds in today's highly charged political environments, including America's deeply polarized Red State/Blue State divide.
With case studies, cultural critique, and a critical lens on labor and sexuality, Matejowsky reveals how these restaurants are more than just risqué marketing gimmicks. They reflect deeper anxieties about gender, identity, and the uneasy fusion of sex and service in American consumer culture. Risqué Business is a high-spirited study of an industry that thrives at the intersection of appetite and identity.
