Summary

In a world where digital distractions fracture attention spans, Focused Mind Techniques offers a neuroscience-backed roadmap to reclaim mental clarity. The book’s core theme revolves around training the brain’s neuroplasticity—its ability to rewire itself—to combat distraction and enhance focus. Central to this approach is understanding the brain’s "default mode network," a system that drives mind-wandering during downtime, and leveraging mindfulness practices to quiet this mental chatter. Unlike generic productivity advice, the book grounds its strategies in fMRI studies and behavioral experiments, revealing how multitasking slashes productivity by 40% and how structured "digital detoxes" can reset cognitive control.

The book stands out by blending interdisciplinary insights—from cognitive science to architecture—into actionable steps. It divides its approach into three parts: explaining the neuroscience of attention, detailing methods like "attention anchoring" (using sensory cues to refocus), and crafting personalized routines. A unique feature is its diagnostic framework, helping readers identify specific focus challenges—like impulsivity or sensory overload—and match them to targeted fixes. For example, it connects chronotypes (natural energy peaks) to optimal task scheduling, arguing that aligning work with biological rhythms boosts deep focus.

Written in clear, jargon-free language, Focused Mind Techniques balances scientific rigor with practicality. Chapters build from theory to exercises, such as breathwork to suppress distracting brain activity or redesigning environments to minimize cognitive drag. By emphasizing incremental habit changes over drastic overhauls, it provides a realistic path for anyone—from students to professionals—to strengthen mental resilience in an age of constant distraction.

The Stoic philosophers of antiquity recognized something we often forget. Good fortune does not guarantee happiness, and bad fortune does not guarantee misery. Boethius was the last philosopher of ancient Rome and a Christian theologian. He was also an illustrious senator who suffered a spectacular reversal of fortune. Falsely accused of treason and sentenced to death, he spent several months in prison awaiting his execution. For consolation he turned to the Stoics he had spent his life studying. They helped him to remember that the good things he once enjoyed—wealth, power, fame—could not make him truly happy. Also, that the injustice he suffered need not make him miserable. But the Stoics were not the only philosophers Boethius sought for consolation. The Stoics had taught that the highest happiness we can hope for is tranquility—serene indifference despite all the trials of life. But for Boethius, tranquility was not enough. He reached for something beyond Stoicism. Something that promised true happiness, come what may. This book is a guide through Boethius’s The Consolation of Philosophy. It shows how Boethius, in his darkest hour, took everything noble from Stoicism and fused it with a rational and religious conviction that there is a hope for happiness through and beyond the suffering of this life.

Operation Desert Storm reveals how two 101st Airborne intelligence soldiers averted disaster during the Gulf War.
“During Desert Storm the Air Force and the Armor forces were the thunder but the 101st was the lightning.”—General Norman Schwarzkopf, April, 1991. Camp Eagle II, Saudi Arabia
Operation Desert Storm chronicles perhaps the most incredible story of the Gulf War that has never been told. It describes two young soldiers from the intelligence section of 1-327 Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, Captain Jose Delgado and Sergeant Jesus Gonzalez, who unlocked an intelligence puzzle none of their higher headquarters recognized. This pivotal discovery occurred after the finalization of the 101st Airborne’s plans for attacking into Iraq and altered the direction of Desert Storm.
1-327 Infantry was also the lead unit of what became the largest air assault (by helicopter) in US history. The 101st Airborne was a unique army division because of the 300+ helicopters in its arsenal. General Schwarzkopf’s “Hail Mary” plan, to use the 101st to air assault deep into Iraq and cut the Euphrates Valley, was the boldest operational maneuver for the US Military since the Inchon landing in Korea in 1950. Schwarzkopf’s plan stretched the division’s capabilities to their limits and demonstrated the 101st Airborne’s strengths and weaknesses. Capt. Jose Delgado and Sgt. Jesus Gonzalez discovered the fatal intelligence flaw, an enemy battalion’s bunker-trench complex in 1-327 Infantry’s lead company’s landing zone. Their discovery, 48 hours before the air assault, caused the division’s plan to be altered, although it was a significant challenge to do so. Without their discovery, the attack was destined for disaster.
In writing the book, Colonel Frank Hancock, Battalion Commander of 1-327 Infantry, asked soldiers from across the battalion to provide narratives and their recollections of what happened, thereby providing a full view of what occurred and why, from the perspective of soldiers ranging in rank from private to colonel. The book also details the process of how the US Army learned from its experiences in Vietnam, made changes, and became a different, structured, and more lethal army in the post-Vietnam era.

How you see your life is complex and can rarely be expressed in an answer that fits on a bumper sticker. Instead, a longer answer is required, one that has roots in early experiences that influenced the development of your character and shaped your views on nature, prejudice, religion, and war. Ultimately, enlightenment comes from reflection on those around you and the impressionable events of childhood that impacted your maturity. William F. Merck’s second book, “Breadcrumbs: Finding a Philosophy of Life,” approaches this quest through a framework loosely based on the seven philosophies of education and concentrates on themes of learning, values, reasoning, morals, religion, aesthetics, and world views. In this work, the author uses stories from his life’s journey to illustrate points in time that helped form his view of the world and his place in it. From growing up in Southern Georgia in the 1940s, to becoming a military officer and a corporate leader, he discovers a nexus between early feelings and subsequent notions and beliefs. He invites you to contemplate your own early experiences as an investigative exercise in understanding what you believe and why you think the way you do today.

The power of Colette's work comes from its modernist storytelling.

Colette was a pioneering, groundbreaking modernist writer, but has not always had her originality and worth recognized in Britain. Her work provocatively uses unstable narratives, gaps, silences, fairytale, mythical tropes, and sensual evocations of childhood, sex, and landscapes.

In this book, Michèle Roberts examines how Colette invents new forms to express her unsettling content on desire, perversion, aging, and different forms of love. Delving into four key texts, Roberts explores Colette's willingness to break open taboos about older woman and desire, as well as hidden and forbidden aspects of human longings and pleasures.

Through these re-readings, Roberts discovers that Colette's work is even more entrancing, more disturbing, and more original than she first thought.

Nearly 50 years after Napoleon met his Waterloo, generals across the West continued to study his tactics and engage their armies the same way armies fought during the Napoleonic Era. Despite advances in military technology and the advent of railroads for transportation, all of which made defensive warfare more effective, acclaimed military geniuses like Robert E. Lee used flank attacks and infantry charges against superior numbers in an effort to win decisive victories, and it would not be until World War I that concepts of modern warfare made the Napoleonic Era of the early 19th century outdated.
Napoleon’s enemies would famously say he was worth 50,000 men in the field, but the simple truth is he wasn’t able to dominate Europe on his own. In fact, the subordinates and soldiers underneath him participated in several of history’s most famous battles and charted the course of Napoleon’s rise and fall. No single factor can account for these victories, which could be attributed to a combination of high morale, a truly egalitarian approach to promotion from the ranks, a radical army organization, and the inspired leadership of Napoleon, all of which combined to make the Grande Armée virtually unbeatable for the first few years of its existence.
The 18th century was a tumultuous period for the British army, one often overlooked in popular accounts of British history. It began with the formal unification of Britain, a period of great success for the nation's armies, which were led by one of Britain's greatest generals, the Duke of Marlborough. This was followed by a period of global activity and military reform as the British Empire expanded. Though naval power played a greater part in this success, it led to new obligations and challenges for the army. Even as the empire soared to new heights, the 18th century was one that was initially marked by triumph but ended in failure and decline.
