Sinopse

Addiction Recovery offers a comprehensive guide to understanding and overcoming addiction, emphasizing that recovery is a personalized journey rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. It explores the psychological underpinnings of addiction, highlights advancements in treatment methodologies, and underscores the importance of aftercare and relapse prevention. The book acknowledges addiction as a chronic, relapsing condition, asserting that successful long-term management requires integrating various therapies and lifestyle adjustments.

Readers will gain insights into the neurobiological mechanisms driving addictive behaviors and the societal factors contributing to substance use disorders, building a solid foundation for understanding this complex health issue. This book distinguishes itself by adopting a holistic approach, considering the individual's overall well-being through self-compassion and mindfulness. It examines various treatment options, from cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to motivational interviewing (MI) and pharmacological interventions.

Progressing from the science of addiction to treatment methods and relapse prevention strategies, the book equips readers with practical exercises and real-life examples to apply the concepts.

Explore the secret behind George Washington’s military genius with an award-winning West Point history professor. George Washington came to be known as Father of His Country. In his role as commander in chief of the Continental Army, George Washington defeated the British in the American Revolution and established the United States of America. Through his extraordinary military leadership, he guaranteed that the American Republic would move forward in its revolutionary experiment. So how was Washington able to win this seemingly unwinnable war? This compelling 15-lecture audio course, presented by West Point history professor Seanegan Sculley, answers this and many more questions about one of the most foundational figures in American history. Professor Sculley explores Washington’s singular military career from its beginnings during the French and Indian War through the end of the Revolution. After investigating Washington’s boyhood experiences and his service in the French and Indian War, you’ll look into the first years of the American Revolution, as he attempts to control a disorganized armed force with no institutional structure. Next, you’ll transition into the second half of the war, as Washington learns from his mistakes and builds a more professional army capable of working with allies to defeat the British. Last, you’ll analyze his actions as a strategist and tactician, as a military administrator and commander, and finally as the first president of the United States wrestling with lingering issues from the War for Independence. This publication was privately produced and is not the product of an official of the United States Army acting in an official capacity. On April 12, 1861, Confederate troops began firing on Fort Sumter, beginning the bloodiest conflict in American history. Since that time numerous historians have described the attack in many well-regarded books, yet the event still remains overlooked at times in the minds of the public.

The Cannons Roar seeks to remedy that. Rather than providing a third-person, after-the-fact description, acclaimed author Bruce Chadwick will tell the story of the attack from the people who were in the thick of it. The Cannons Roar will not only provide portraits of the major players, it will give voice to dozens of regular people from across the country and socioeconomic spectrum.

Using letters, newspaper articles, diaries, journals, and other written sources, Chadwick describes in vivid detail the events preceding the attack, the attack itself, and its aftermath. Collectively, listeners will obtain a fuller understanding of the politics and thinking of political and military leaders that influenced their decisions or lack thereof.

Combining traditional history with the in-the-moment ethos of an oral history, The Cannons Roar brings this historic moment in American history to new and vivid life.

The first of two volumes of key texts from American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, the father of pragmatism.“Often considered the greatest American philosopher, Peirce produced no comprehensive treatise; until now, students and scholars had to read through widely scattered papers to gain an overall view of his thought. This anthology remedies that situation by offering a full representation of his work, including several hard-to-obtain items. . . . Highly recommended for scholarly collections.” —Library JournalA convenient two-volume reader's edition makes accessible to students and scholars the most important philosophical papers of the brilliant American thinker Charles Sanders Peirce. Volume 1 presents twenty-five key texts, chronologically arranged, beginning with Peirce’s “On a New List of Categories” of 1867, a highly regarded alternative to Kantian philosophy, and ending with the first sustained and systematic presentation of his evolutionary metaphysics in the Monist Metaphysical Series of 1891–1893. The book features a clear introduction and informative headnotes to help readers grasp the nature and significance of Peirce’s thought system. Bringing together all the writings needed for the study of Peirce’s systematic philosophy and its development, Volume 1 is ideal for classroom use. Volume 2, covering the period from 1894 until Peirce’s death in 1914, will highlight the development of his system of signs and his mature pragmatism.“A first-rate edition, which supersedes all other portable Peirces. . . . All the Peirce most people will ever need.” —Louis Menand, The New York Review of Books“The Monist essays are included in the first volume of the compact and welcome Essential Peirce; they are by Peirce's standards quite accessible and splendid in their cosmic scope and assertiveness.” ―London Review of Books

This is the charming and poignant account of twenty-five years spent in Orkney. After her marriage to an islander, Christine Muir went to live on the tiny island of North Ronaldsay, where she and her husband brought up their four children and ran a small croft.
Following the seasons though the year, Orkney Days is full of observations of the natural world at their doorstep. Beautiful descriptions of the island and its flora and fauna – from wildflowers and medicinal herbs to seals and seabirds – are mingled with memories of a young family growing up and the rhythms of daily life far from the bustle of the modern world. There is much too about the work involved in running their croft and the cattle and sheep that are its mainstay, about the traditions and lore of the island which stretch back over countless generations, and about the modern developments which changed it forever.

The Book of Eastbay - How Two...

Unable to contain himself, Rick pitched Art: move back to Wausau and start a business selling shoes. Art said, "What are you, an idiot? Selling shoes? How is this even worth trying?"

This is the story of Eastbay, a startup tale unlike most you've heard. First it was $5,000 worth of track sneakers sold out of the back of an AMC Gremlin. Then it was a quiet storefront in Wausau, Wisconsin. Then it became a catalog, a bible to GenX kids growing up in the 1980s and '90s, a powerful tastemaker so authentic that pro athletes swore by it. Sneakerhead culture started here.

Eastbay was a company ahead of its time that mastered mail-order selling before Amazon existed. That grew so fast and was so successful in the first athletic mail-order wholesale shoe business that Nike pulled its AIR products from the catalog. After five years, Nike decided to allow AIR products back into the Eastbay catalog and ultimately Eastbay partnered with Nike to produce several Nike catalogs.

Sneakers are a global obsession, and it all started here, where kids were encouraged to dream big, and dream often, which is just what the founders were doing all along. This is their story. This is The Book of Eastbay.
