In the early months of 1815, Europe found itself once again on the brink of war. Napoleon Bonaparte, exiled to the island of Elba after his abdication in 1814, had made a daring return to France. On March 1, he landed on the southern coast and began a dramatic march north to Paris. Along the way, regiments sent to arrest him instead joined his cause. By mid-March, he had reclaimed power in what would be known as the Hundred Days. This return sent shockwaves across the continent and disrupted the fragile peace established by the Congress of Vienna.
The leaders of the major European powers—Britain, Prussia, Austria, and Russia—swiftly moved to form the Seventh Coalition. Their shared goal was simple: defeat Napoleon once and for all. The coalition agreed to raise massive armies and converge on France from multiple directions. Among the key figures in this alliance were the Duke of Wellington, commanding Anglo-allied forces, and Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, leading the Prussians. Napoleon, ever the strategist, understood the urgency of striking quickly before these forces could unite.
France, still weary from years of revolution and war, was divided in its support. While many rallied to Napoleon out of loyalty or fear, others viewed his return as a dangerous setback. Nonetheless, he managed to raise an army of around 124,000 men—smaller than the coalition forces, but composed largely of veterans loyal to him. Napoleon's plan hinged on speed: he would drive a wedge between Wellington and Blücher’s armies in Belgium, defeat them separately, and then force a negotiated peace.

“The Broken Path: Native Tribes and the Tragedy of the Trail of Tears” delves into one of the darkest chapters in American history, documenting the harrowing experiences of Southeastern Native American tribes during the forced relocations known as the Trail of Tears. This book offers a poignant exploration of the devastating consequences of U.S. government policies that sought to remove Indigenous peoples from their ancestral lands. Through the lens of selected tribes, whose fates, though varied, were marked by equal suffering, the narrative reveals the inhumane reality of manifest destiny.
This doctrine drove the relentless expansion of white settlers across the continent. Despite efforts by Native Americans to resist through legal battles and armed conflict, their struggle was tragically futile against the overwhelming forces of displacement. This powerful account underscores the enduring impact of this tragic era on the Indigenous populations of America.

The Founding Presidents of the United States played a pivotal role in shaping the early direction of the nation. Their leadership laid the groundwork for the establishment of a new republic and the principles that would guide the country for generations. George Washington, the first President, set the tone for the presidency itself. His leadership during the Revolutionary War had earned him widespread admiration, and when the new government was formed, Washington was unanimously chosen as the first leader of the United States. His presidency established many of the precedents for the executive branch, including the creation of a Cabinet, the two-term limit, and the peaceful transfer of power.
Washington’s leadership was tested with several challenges during his presidency, most notably the issue of neutrality in foreign affairs. As tensions rose between France and Great Britain, Washington carefully navigated the country through these conflicts, urging the nation to avoid entanglement in European wars. His Farewell Address warned against permanent foreign alliances and political factions, offering advice that would resonate throughout American history. Washington’s decision to step down after two terms also set a significant precedent that would shape the expectations of future presidents.
Following Washington’s tenure, John Adams became the second President of the United States. A Federalist and a key figure in the early American Revolution, Adams had been a vocal advocate for independence and the formation of a strong central government. His presidency, however, was marked by political divisions and foreign policy struggles. The most notable event during his administration was the Quasi-War with France, which resulted from tensions over the French Revolution and the actions of the French government against American shipping.
