  What is Pakistan? The name refers to a seventy-year-old post-colonial product of the bloodiest partition of territory and population that accompanied the end of British empire in South Asia.   This Very Short Introduction looks at Pakistan as one of the two nation-states of the Indian sub-continent that emerged in 1947. Pippa Virdee reaches into the ancient past to demonstrate the influence of trajectories of human settlement and civilization on Pakistan's contemporary political arena, and shows how the longer continuities between the land and its peoples are as important as the short-term changes in the political landscape. She considers Pakistan's religion and society, the state and the military, everyday life, popular culture, languages and literature, as well as Pakistan's relationship with the rest of the world. Virdee also looks to the challenges of the twenty-first century and the future of Pakistan.

  Once, in a place called Gaza, Jewish families lived among gardens, vineyards, and the peaceful sound of the sea. It was a land filled with beauty and hope. The Jewish people who lived there loved their homes, their schools, and their neighborhoods. 
  In a spirit of peace, the Jews gave this land to their Palestinian neighbors, hoping it would be the beginning of friendship. But sadly, instead of peace, the leaders called Hamas destroyed the gardens and vineyards. They built only concrete walls and hidden tunnels meant to bring harm, not kindness. 
  Since then, the people of Israel have not found the peace they offered. On October 7, 2023, a terrible attack brought much sorrow and fear. Since that day, the Jewish people have faced more pain and danger, even though their deepest wish is to live safely and peacefully in their homeland. 
  This book was written so children and families around the world will know the story: that the Jewish people long for peace, but their neighbors chose hatred instead of friendship. The author hopes that by remembering the past and telling the truth with gentle hearts, we can all dream of a future where peace and kindness will finally grow again-like gardens by the sea. This book reflects a true story that happened in Gaza when the Jews were forced off of their land as part of a peace deal with the Palestinians. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

  Gifted People - Being Aware of...

  I felt compelled to share what I've recently discovered about giftedness. Personally, I wish I had been informed about this particular divergence from the average human brain earlier. However, my intention is not to attract undue attention or create a sense of superiority over others. 
    
  When I mentioned to my parents that many descriptions of gifted individuals resonated with my own experiences, they were hesitant to accept this label. The term "gifted" often carries implications of superiority, which can seem boastful. Yet, true talent or giftedness should foster humility and gratitude, coupled with a determination to navigate the challenges that come with such exceptional qualities. 
    
  Saying you are gifted often results in perceptions of being smarter than others. Yet, those who grasp these concepts usually understand that increased knowledge reveals the vast extent of what remains unknown. Even if you grasp things more quickly than others, the paradox is that those who believe they know everything are often the least knowledgeable. This can create a paradox for those trying to find self-confidence in their intelligence or creative abilities.
