Sinopse

In "Satan's Diary," Leonid Andreyev delves into the profound complexities of human existence through the lens of the devil himself. This innovative narrative, written in an introspective and confessional style, offers readers a surreal yet harrowing exploration of morality, anguish, and the enigmatic nature of evil. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Russian existentialism, the work employs rich symbolism and psychological depth, reflecting Andreyev's fascination with the human condition amid a rapidly changing society. The diary format allows Satan to recount his observations of humanity's follies, presenting a provocative commentary on faith, freedom, and despair. Leonid Andreyev, a pivotal figure in the Russian Symbolist movement, was deeply influenced by his own tumultuous life experiences, including the moral crises of his contemporaries. The author experienced a spectrum of existential struggles following the upheavals of the Russo-Japanese War and the Bolshevik Revolution. These events profoundly informed his narrative, providing a fertile ground for his exploration of human essence and the philosophical inquiries expressed through Satan, an embodiment of both observer and participant in human suffering. "Satan's Diary" is essential for readers seeking to engage with a unique philosophical discourse that challenges perceptions of good and evil. Andreyev's compelling prose and darkly humorous insights make this work a captivating read for those interested in existential literature, Russian history, and the eternal struggle within the human soul.

Unlike many of Lovecraft's other tales, "The White Ship" does not expressly tie into the popularized Cthulhu Mythos. However, the story cannot be entirely excluded from Mythos continuity either, since it makes reference to preternatural, godlike beings. The tone and temperament of "The White Ship" speaks largely of the Dream Cycle literary structure that Lovecraft utilized in other stories such as The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath (1926) and "The Cats of Ulthar" (1920).
In this story, a lighthouse keeper named Basil Elton engages upon a peculiar fantasy in which a robed, bearded man is piloting a mystical white ship which appears when the moon is full. Elton walks out across the water on a bridge of moonbeams and joins the bearded man on this ship, and together they explore a mystical chain of islands unlike anything that can be found on Earth. They travel past Zar, a green land where "dwell all the dreams and thoughts of beauty that come to men once and then are forgotten", then the majestic city of Thalarion, "City of a Thousand Wonders", where dwell frightful demons. They pass Akariel, the huge carven gate of Thalarion, and continue their voyage. Elton is informed that those who enter both places have never returned. During the voyage they seem to be following an azure celestial bird. They also pass Xura, the "Land of Pleasures Unattained", which seems pleasant from a distance but reeks of plague upon getting nearer. They finally settle in Sona-Nyl, the "Land of Fancy",

New Weird Folk Horror intertwines with a troubled family history in the debut novella from Colin Hinckley!
Eddie's parents may be arguing about the disappearance of his infant brother Danny, but Eddie's facing a terror all of his own. There's a strange figure outside that claims it has Danny safe and sound—all Eddie needs to do to get his brother back is open that window.
Eddie's father is filled with guilt over his relationship with his own lost brother. His mother has been abandoned to navigate her grief and terror alone. And his grandmother carries a disturbing, all-too-relevant truth about their shared family history.
As minutes tick by and hope for Danny grows ever smaller, the very fabric of their world disintegrates, welcoming eldritch terrors of unspeakable provenance to their doorstep. The family is losing a decades- long struggle against an entity that is not of this world, and its hunger threatens to swallow them whole.
“Combine Shirley Jackson’s haunted claustrophobia, Stephen King’s nail-biting plots, and the cosmic otherworld-horror of Stranger Things, and you get one wholly original Colin Hinckley. Spend a few hours in [his] mind, and I guarantee you’ll be drawing the curtains tight for weeks.”GennaRose Nethercott, author of Thistlefoot
“The Black Lord brings to mind a low-lit tavern; you there with your drink, overhearing the hushed talk from a nearby table. Start this book at dusk, within view of a tree line. Feel something stare back. This is my first Hinckley, but it won’t be my last.” Scott J. Moses, author of Our Own Unique Affliction
