Summary

Anathema is a tragic drama that narrates the story of David, the play's lead, who inherits a fortune and sets out to reduce all the world's misery. He is manipulated throughout by 'Anathema', who represents the spirit of reasoning, of revolt, and sometimes Satan. Anathema wishes to have something to strengthen his case against God the Creator. The play initiated a lively debate in the Russian Orthodox Church at the time. A debate between those who denounced it as an attack on Christianity and those who applauded it as a vindication of Christianity. The play has the outstanding merit of introducing two chief characters, David and Anathema, who are subtle and striking figures. This Russian drama is a solid and profound work that is well worth exploring.

Theatre Royal. The very name summons up something of grandeur and eloquence. And it was. Hosted by Laurence Olivier, these big-name productions also included the creme de la creme of acting talents from John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, and Orson Welles to Trevor Howard, Michael Redgrave and Olivier himself. They were based on works by the worlds’ leading authors, among them Charles Dickens, Henry James, Oscar Wilde, and Anton Chekhov. These are but a few of whose company we shall be keeping as we raise the curtain on our first installment of theatrical history.

Anna Jordan's Bruntwood Prize-winning play, Yen explores a childhood lived without boundaries and the consequences of being forced to grow up on your own.
Hench is sixteen, Bobbie is thirteen. They're home alone in Feltham with their dog Taliban; playing PlayStation, streaming porn, watching the world go by. Sometimes their mum Maggie visits, usually with empty pockets and empty promises. Then Jenny shows up.
Yen won the 2013 Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting, and was first performed at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, in 2015.
This new edition published alongside the Royal Court Theatre production in January 2016.
