The novel revolves around the relationship between Nekhldoff, a Russian landlord, and Máslova, a prostitute whose life took a sharp turn for the worse after Nekhldoff wronged her ten years before the course of the story. After sitting on the jury for a sentencing hearing in which Máslova is charged with poisoning a merchant, Nekhldoff begins to realize the harm he has inflicted on Máslova—as well as the harm inflicted by the Russian state and society on the poor and marginalized—as he embarks on a desire to alleviate Máslova's suffering.

The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas is a thrilling historical adventure that has captivated readers for generations with its unforgettable heroes, daring duels, political intrigue, and timeless spirit of loyalty and friendship. First published in 1844, this swashbuckling masterpiece transports readers to seventeenth-century France, where honor is defended by the sword and courage defines a man's destiny.

The story follows a young and ambitious Gascon named d'Artagnan who travels to Paris with dreams of joining the King's Musketeers. Fiery, brave, and sometimes impulsive, d'Artagnan quickly finds himself entangled in a series of duels with three legendary musketeers—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Instead of becoming enemies, the four men form an unbreakable bond, united by their shared devotion to honor and their famous creed: "All for one, and one for all."

As France teeters on the brink of political unrest, the newly formed comrades are drawn into dangerous schemes orchestrated by the cunning Cardinal Richelieu and the mysterious and manipulative Milady de Winter. From secret missions to royal conspiracies, the musketeers risk their lives to protect Queen Anne and defend the crown against treachery. Along the way, they engage in thrilling sword fights, daring rescues, and clever deceptions that test both their bravery and their loyalty to one another.

Dumas masterfully blends historical events with fictional drama, creating a vibrant portrait of a turbulent era. His characters are larger than life yet deeply human—each musketeer possessing distinct qualities that enrich their camaraderie. Athos carries a noble melancholy, Porthos delights in grandeur and strength, Aramis balances faith with ambition, and d'Artagnan embodies youthful passion and determination. Together, they represent the enduring ideals of friendship, courage, and sacrifice.

Beyond its action and adventure, The Three Musketeers explores themes of honor, loyalty, love, betrayal, and justice. The novel's fast-paced narrative and vivid storytelling make it one of the most celebrated works of historical fiction ever written. Its influence has extended far beyond literature, inspiring countless adaptations in film, theater, and popular culture.

Filled with romance, humor, suspense, and heroic exploits, The Three Musketeers remains a timeless tale of bravery and brotherhood. Alexandre Dumas delivers a sweeping epic where friendship triumphs over adversity and where true heroes stand united—no matter the cost.

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway is a landmark novel of the 20th century that captures the disillusionment and aimlessness of the post–World War I generation, often referred to as the "Lost Generation." The story follows Jake Barnes, an American journalist living in Paris, and his circle of expatriate friends—including the charismatic and troubled Lady Brett Ashley—as they travel from the cafés of Montparnasse to the bullfighting arenas of Pamplona. With Hemingway's signature sparse prose and understated emotional depth, the novel explores themes of love, identity, masculinity, and the quest for meaning in a world forever changed by war. A poignant reflection on human resilience and vulnerability, this novel remains one of Hemingway’s most enduring and influential works.

Cleopatra was by birth an Egyptian; by ancestry and descent she was a Greek. Thus, while Alexandria and the delta of the Nile formed the scene of the most important events and incidents of her history, it was the blood of Macedon which flowed in her veins. Her character and action are marked by the genius, the courage, the originality, and the impulsiveness pertaining to the stock from which she sprung. The events of her history, on the other hand, and the peculiar character of her adventures, her sufferings, and her sins, were determined by the circumstances with which she was surrounded, and the influences which were brought to bear upon her in the soft and voluptuous clime where the scenes of her early life were laid...

Set against the larger-than-life backdrop of the Napoleonic wars, Hardy’s only historical novel tells of the loves and sorrows of ordinary people caught in extraordinary times.
When an anticipated invasion brings several regiments to her small rural community, young country maid Anne Garland is courted by three men in uniform: the loyal trumpet-major John Loveday, his sailor-brother Bob, and cowardly Festus Derriman of the yeomanry cavalry.
Founded largely on testimony from elders known to Hardy in his childhood, The Trumpet-Major offers a complex weave of historical fact and fiction that explores the subversive effects of ordinary human desires on systematized versions of history.
