Stella Benson (1892-1933) was an English feminist, novelist, poet, and short story and travel writer. The Desert Islander is the story of a deserter from the French Foreign Legion who seeks help from an Englishman living in a remote part of southern China during the Chinese war. Two facts quickly become apparent about our legionnaire. First, that he has a narcissistic personality disorder which leaves him devoid of empathy and in desperate need to attention and adulation. Second that he is suffering from a gangrenous leg.The imperturbable Englishman, who is totally disinclined to pander to his visitor's over-bloated sense of self-importance, insists on setting off next morning through the fighting zone to try to bring his guest to a hospital.

“Wickedly funny, deviously twisted and enormously satisfying. This is a big juicy bite of zombie goodness. Two decaying thumbs up.”—Jonathan Maberry
To be dead, or not to be dead…
In the Unnatural Quarter, golems slave away in sweatshops, necromancers sell black-market trinkets to tourists, and the dead rise up—to work the night shift. But zombie detective Dan Shamble is no ordinary working stiff.
When a local senator and his goons picket a ghostly production of Shakespeare in the Dark—condemning the troupe’s “unnatural” lifestyles—Dan smells something rotten. And if something smells rotten to a zombie, you’re in serious trouble….
Before his way of life, er, death is destroyed, Dan wants answers. Along the way, he needs to provide security for a mummified madame, defend a mixed-race couple (he’s a vampire, she’s a werewolf) from housing discrimination, and save his favorite watering hole, the Goblin Tavern, from drying up. Throw in a hairy hit-man and a bank robber who walks through walls, and Dan Shamble’s plate is full.
Maybe this time the zombie detective has bitten off more than he can chew…
“A darkly funny, wonderfully original detective tale.”—Kelley Armstrong
“Sharp and funny; this zombie detective rocks! Loved it!”—Patricia Briggs
“An unpredictable walk on the weird side. Prepare to be entertained.”—Charlaine Harris

“That’s enough Ryan. Let your dad go make his report. He has a big meeting this morning.”
“I’ll be home later today son and you can tell me all about this strange dream you had ok.”
No one was going to believe anything I said. I had to stop speaking before they start thinking I was crazy. Mom asked about it again later that day but I didn’t want to talk about it. She suggested that it was the stress from the previous day that gave me such a scary dream. I wanted to believe her but it was just too real.
Later in the day, mom was in the kitchen learning new recipes for Christmas from a cookbook she found. She asked me to be her taste tester. But I wasn’t so interested because something else was on my mind. I told her that everything was good just so that I could entertain her and get out.

“Guys, it’s open!” Robert inspected the door and called them. When they turned their heads, they saw him standing right next to the opened door of the dead tree. “I’m not getting inside that creepy thing,” said Marcela. “But we don’t have a choice. These crows are crazy. With that large number, we’ll be brutally torn to pieces if they attack us. Come on,” said Regan. He grabbed Marcela’s hand and walked back to the old tree. “Wait!” their guide Freddie suddenly yelled.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea to go in there. I don’t want to believe the stories, but have you heard about the Baba Yaga?” he asked. “Yes, we do. A witch that was responsible for the missing people who enter the woods and never returned, Right? That’s why we are here to begin with. But seriously, now is not the time to believe in such BS. It’s getting really dark and I don’t want to be the dinner of those crazy crows,” Robert responded.
