The War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells, first serialised in 1897 by Pearson's Magazine in the UK and by Cosmopolitan magazine in the US.
Written between 1895 and 1897, it is one of the earliest stories to detail a conflict between mankind and an extra-terrestrial race and is one of the most commented-on works in the science fiction canon.
The plot has been related to invasion literature of the time. The novel has been variously interpreted as a commentary on evolutionary theory, British imperialism, and generally Victorian superstitions, fears, and prejudices. Wells said that the plot arose from a discussion with his brother Frank about the catastrophic effect of the British on indigenous Tasmanians. What would happen, he wondered, if Martians did to Britain what the British had done to the Tasmanians, who were wiped out with the last dying in 1876.
The War of the Worlds has been both popular (having never been out of print) and influential, spawning half a dozen feature films, a record album, various comic book adaptations, a number of television series, and radio dramas, the most infamous being the 1938 radio programme directed by and starring Orson Welles that allegedly caused public panic among listeners who did not know the Martian invasion was fictional, although the scale of panic is disputed as the program had relatively few listeners.
The book was banned immediately in China, Japan, Vietnam, as well as North America due to political and scientific theories touted by the novel.

For years Kiera Scruggs has envisioned herself a staunch defender of social causes and women’s rights. Her self-image contrasts with the reality of the past where she served prison time for helping kill the wife of her former lover. Details of her crime are ones she has kept from her grown children all their lives.
An inheritance from Kiera’s indulgent late father has helped provide her family a comfortable –if quite insulated- lifestyle. When Kiera’s son Rory is delayed on a visit to Kentucky she begins to suspect something is wrong. She pays a visit to a fortune teller to inquire if Rory is safe and when he will be returning? The fortune teller only provides an ominous warning, one Kiera finds infuriatingly absurd. She decides to take matters into her own hands in order to get Rory home by petitioning for help from the ancient Gaelic goddess worshiped by her paternal grandmother. This dark and forbidding deity demands fearlessness and an unfaltering disavowal for conventional ethics. To those willing to prove their devotion the crone offers the fulfillment of any petition.

This proves tricky, as those in power don't want their authority challenged.

In order to produce proof of their dire situation, Hazel and her friends have to return to the forward section of the Daedalus to find another surviving command AI so they can find where the Yi are hiding and what their goal is. Amoretti: a Sonnet Sequence

""Amoretti" is a captivating sequence of 89 sonnets written by the renowned English poet Edmund Spenser. These sonnets follow the tradition of Petrarchan sonnets, a popular form during the Renaissance period. Let's explore more about this poetic work: The Amoretti (meaning little love poems) is a sequence of 89 sonnets written in the tradition of the Petrarchan sonnets, a popular form for poets of the Renaissance period. Spenser's sequence has been largely neglected in modern times, while those of his contemporaries William Shakespeare and Sir Philip Sidney have been acclaimed. However, because of the artistic skill, along with the emotion and the humor exhibited, these poems deserve a broader hearing, even though they may be somewhat difficult for the present-day reader, partly through Spenser's love for words and expressions that were already archaic in his time."
