Sinopse

Sharks Sense Electricity explores the fascinating world of electroreception, a unique sensory ability that allows sharks to perceive the electrical fields emitted by other living organisms. This "sixth sense," facilitated by specialized organs called ampullae of Lorenzini, plays a crucial role in their hunting strategies and overall survival within the marine ecosystem. The book delves into how sharks use this ability to detect prey hidden beneath the sand or in murky waters, providing them with a significant advantage in the predator-prey relationship.

The book examines the biological mechanisms behind electroreception, tracing the path of electrical signals from the ampullae to the brain, and explores its evolutionary origins. Readers will gain insights into how this sensory system has diversified across different shark species. Sharks Sense Electricity begins by establishing a foundation in marine biology and sensory ecology, then progresses through the neurobiology, evolutionary history, and ecological implications of electroreception, culminating in a discussion of its impact on shark conservation.

    Eastern Han Dynasty - Rebuilding...

The Eastern Han Dynasty emerged from the chaos and turmoil that followed the collapse of Wang Mang’s Xin Dynasty. After usurping the Han throne in 9 CE, Wang Mang attempted radical reforms, including land redistribution and changes to the currency system. However, his policies destabilized the empire, leading to widespread discontent, natural disasters, and peasant uprisings. Among these, the most significant was the Red Eyebrows Rebellion, which contributed to the downfall of Wang Mang’s rule. In 23 CE, rebel forces stormed the capital, Chang’an, killing Wang Mang and leaving the empire in a state of disarray.
In the wake of this collapse, Liu Xiu, a distant relative of the former Han imperial family, seized the opportunity to restore Han rule. He first distinguished himself as a military leader, defeating rival factions and consolidating power. In 25 CE, he declared himself Emperor Guangwu and established the Eastern Han Dynasty, with Luoyang as its new capital. Unlike the Western Han, which had ruled from Chang’an, the relocation of the capital symbolized a fresh start, one that aimed to correct the failures of the past.
Emperor Guangwu’s early reign was marked by efforts to stabilize the empire and reestablish Han authority. He adopted a cautious approach to governance, reducing taxes and reviving Confucian principles to strengthen the legitimacy of his rule. Unlike Wang Mang’s drastic policies, Guangwu relied on gradual reforms to restore economic stability. He also worked to rebuild the imperial bureaucracy, appointing competent officials who could help him govern effectively. By reinforcing Confucianism as the guiding philosophy of the state, he sought to restore order and unity among the people.

In Spain: What Everyone Needs to Know®, a timely addition to Oxford's What Everyone Needs to Know® series, veteran journalist William Chislett provides political and historical context for Spain's current economic and political predicament. Chislett recounts the country's fascinating and often turbulent history, beginning with the Muslim conquest in 711 and ending with the nation's deep economic crisis, sparked by the spectacular collapse of its real estate and construction sectors in 2010. He explains the country's transition from dictatorship to democracy and covers such issues as the creation of a welfare state, the influx of immigrants, internal strife from the separatist Catalan region, the effects of stringent austerity measures, the strengths and weaknesses of the economy, and how the country can create a more sustainable economic model for the future. In a concise, question-and-answer format that allows listeners to quickly access areas of particular interest, the book addresses a wide range of questions, including: What was the legacy of the Muslim presence between 711 and 1492? How did the Spanish Empire Arise? What were the causes of the 1936-39 Civil War? Why did the Socialists win a landslide victory in the 1982 election? What was the impact of European Economic Community membership? What is the violent Basque separatist group ETA? And more.

    TRIVIA SAMPLES:

“At the end of the movie with the cat, the background poster reads "sure locks for homes," a playful reference to Sherlock Holmes.”

“Bing Bong reminisces over a recent memory of Riley, feeling she has grown too large to fit in the wagon. This moment leads to a quiet realization that his time is running out and he may be a burden.”

“Bing Bong's final line is often misquoted as "Take her to the moon for me, Joy." The actual line is "Take her to the moon for me, okay?"

“Joy is often viewed as the only positive emotion in the movie, while the other emotions are seen as negative. However, the film shows that no emotion is inherently positive or negative.”

If you're a fan of Alan Doyle, you'll love and appreciate most of the stories in this book as it serves as the backdrop for a tv series that was never meant to be. Vickie Morgan had been making films and public access tv shows for years when a broadcaster trying to spend their sports budget waltzes into St. John's, Newfoundland during the pandemic (properly masked over Zoom calls of course) and offers Vickie the gig of a lifetime.
How to Fail at Documentary Filmmaking is a hilarious and poignant story that will give you the courage and compassion necessary to understand the problem probably isn't you.
"Wow, Vickie’s determination has to be admired. She'll mow her own path, she's a trooper."
~ Tina Maddigan, author of Written in Stone
"How To Fail At Documentary Filmmaking: a novelization of the unfinished docu-series adapted from an idea for a book based on true events." ~ Josh Morgan, lives with Vickie, read the book four times
