Sinopsis

Sensory Extremes in Insects reveals the extraordinary sensory world of insects, highlighting how these creatures, despite their small size, possess sensory capabilities far beyond human abilities. The book explores insect olfaction, vision, and mechanosensation, detailing how they navigate, communicate, and find resources. It emphasizes that these senses are not mere oddities, but crucial adaptations that explain the ecological success of insects.

The text delves into the fundamental principles of insect sensory physiology, from neurobiology to sensory transduction. For example, moth ultrasonic hearing, vital for evading predators, and the sophisticated polarized light navigation of ants are examined in detail. The book also investigates the evolutionary origins of these systems and their potential applications, from biomimicry to pest control.

This book is unique in its comprehensive approach, integrating various disciplines to provide a holistic view of insect sensory biology. It starts with foundational principles and progresses through specific sensory modalities, concluding with the broad applications of this knowledge, making it accessible to students, researchers, and anyone intrigued by the natural world.

Three textile roads tangle their way through Central Asia. The famous Silk Road united east and west through trade. Older still was the Wool Road, of critical importance when houses made from wool enabled nomads to traverse the inhospitable winter steppes. Then there was the Cotton Road, marked by greed, colonialism and environmental disaster.

At this intersection of human history, fortunes were made and lost through shimmering silks, life-giving felts and gossamer cottons. Chris Aslan, who has spent fifteen years living and working in the region, expertly unravels the strands of this tangled history and embroiders them with his own experiences of life in the heart of Asia.

    Edo Period - Tokugawa Rule...

The Edo period in Japan began with the dramatic rise of Tokugawa Ieyasu and the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which would bring over two centuries of relative peace and stability to the country. This transformation was not immediate but was set into motion by the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Ieyasu, a powerful daimyo and skilled strategist, emerged victorious in this decisive conflict, defeating rival factions and securing his dominance over the fractured Japanese landscape. This battle marked the end of the Warring States period, a time of nearly constant civil war, and laid the foundation for a new era of centralized feudal rule.
In 1603, Ieyasu was granted the title of shogun by the emperor, officially establishing the Tokugawa Shogunate. Although the emperor remained a symbolic figurehead, true political power rested with the shogun. Ieyasu’s government was based in Edo, a small fishing village that quickly developed into a sprawling political and economic center—modern-day Tokyo. From here, the Tokugawa clan implemented a system of governance that emphasized strict control, social hierarchy, and regional oversight. The shogunate devised a complex administrative structure that allowed it to maintain authority over hundreds of semi-autonomous domains ruled by daimyo, while ensuring loyalty through a combination of military strength, economic policy, and social regulation.
One of the key strategies used by Tokugawa Ieyasu to solidify his power was the creation of the han system. Under this arrangement, each daimyo governed a specific territory but was subject to strict oversight from the shogunate. The policy of sankin-kotai, or alternate attendance, required daimyo to spend alternating years in Edo, effectively draining their resources and keeping them under close surveillance. Their families were often kept in Edo as virtual hostages, ensuring obedience and discouraging rebellion.

Lots of people take a walk to clear their heads, but have you ever walked over six hundred miles to do it?On a misty, gray morning in the summer of 2018, Gordon Bernhardt set out from a small town in the French Pyrenees to walk the ancient pilgrim route of Camino de Santiago, seeking clarity for his business, his relationships, and his priorities in life. The lessons he learned as a peregrino—a pilgrim—ranged from insights on financial advising and investing to the importance of noticing the tiniest details of each day: like the ant trails winding across the path at his feet or the “smiling sunflower” that lightened his steps in the middle of a hot summer day.An investing book like no other, Buen Camino: What a Hike through Spain Taught Me about Investing and Life will remind you that although we’re all walking a different path, we’re all headed for a common destination.
